MONTGOMERY, Ala. -
Benjamin Hoffman's goal late in the 88th minute proved to be the difference in a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Lee in the Gulf South Conference opener for AUM.
Hoffman's goal came when he pressured the Lee back line into a lose ball header that he beat LU goalie Jakob Buhrkuhl to. He then collected the ball as Buhrkuhl retreated towards the open net where Hoffman sent a hard shot into the goal from a couple of feet off the end line on a hard angle. It was the second goal of the season for the freshman from Berlin, Germany.
His heroics were needed after Lee got on the board first, scoring in the 22nd minute when Marlon Grossman flicked a pass from Ryan Chouyouti past AUM's
William Blake for a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks tied it 10 minutes later on a
Tasker Wheeler header in traffic off a
Landon Surratt throw in.
AUM (3-0-3, 1-0) remained unbeaten as it held a 12-6 edge in shots and 10-5 in shot on goal. Blake made four saves in picking up his second victory to go with two ties.
Lee (2-3-2, 1-1-1) suffered its first defeat since the opening weekend of the season.
AUM will return to action on Sunday afternoon, playing host to Trevecca Nazarene at the AUM Soccer Complex at 3:30 p.m.
