MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Trent Coleman had a career night for AUM on Saturday, finishing with 23 points and 14 rebounds but the Warhawks fell to No. 18 Valdosta State, 97-87, at the AUM Athletics Complex.
In addition to Coleman's double-double of collegiate bests, AUM (8-8, 5-6 Gulf South) had three starters reach double figures in scoring, led by
Paul Lanzi's 15 points.
Malachi Rhodes had a double-double with 11 and 13 – his fifth of the season – and
Jamir Williams had 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
The Warhawks shot 44 percent and controlled the glass to the tune of a 56-to-34 edge. They had a season-best 24 on the offensive end that they turned into 28 points.
VSU (15-2, 10-1) extended its winning streak to nine games with 23 fast break points and 29 points off 26 AUM turnovers.
The first half went back and forth before the Blazers used a 9-0 run for a 37-30 lead with 4:25 on the clock. The teams traded scores for much of the remainder of the half before a Cobey Harraway 3-pointer put the visitors ahead 53-43 at the intermission. He led the Blazers with 17 points.
AUM came out strong to start the second half, pulling to within 64-60 4:39 into the period. But VSU scored the next eight points to put the margin back into double figures. The Warhawks got it under 10 once later in the game but were never able to get over the hump.
AUM travels to Tennessee next week to face Lee (7-8, 3-8) on Thursday in Cleveland, Tenn. Tipoff at Paul Dana Walker Arena is set for 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
