Warhawks Take Down Blazers in Four Sets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks volleyball team (3-16, GSC: 2-9) defeated the Valdosta State Blazers (8-12, GSC: 7-4) in four sets on Tuesday night from the AUM Athletics Complex to open a three-match home stand.

With the win, AUM ended a three-match losing streak to Valdosta State, with the last win coming in Valdosta in 2023. More impressively, the Warhawks picked up its first win over the Blazers at the AUM Athletics Complex since Nov. 12, 2021.

Kendall McCain set a new career high in digs with 25 and added 18.5 points with 16 kills and three assisted blocks to lead the Warhawks.

Anyaliz Rodriguez added 12 kills, while both setters, Kiara Vega (20 assists, 11 digs) and Addi Vinson (23 assists, 17 digs) each had a double-double.

Asia Montagnani had 13 kills, and Eimy Negron Domenech totaled 25 digs to pace VSU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1

After Valdosta State made it a 6-5 score early in the contest, AUM got the side out right away with a Jaslyn Montgomery spike. For the Warhawks, that sparked a 7-2 run to improve the lead to 13-7.

The Warhawks posted 13 kills in the opening set to the Blazers' seven as the home team took the opener, 25-16.

AUM also had four blocks in the frame, including a Kendall McCain and Courtney Joseph assisted block to get the set point late.

SET 2
Trailing 3-1 early in set two, an 11-4 run by the Warhawks, including three kills by McCain and two by Elise Fulgham made it a 12-7 lead.

AUM's offense was lights out in the second set, as they had 15 kills on 39 swings, committing two attack errors as the Warhawks stormed past the Blazers 25-15 to lead two sets to none.

SET 3
VSU avoided the sweep with a 25-23 win in the third. Tied at 21, VSU used an Eimy Negron Domenench ace and an assisted block from Avery Mullins and Sabrina Oncins to lead 23-21.

However, AUM did not go away quietly, as kills from Joseph and Addi Vinson evened the set at 23. Unfortunately, that would be as close as they would get, as the Blazers saw back-to-back attack miscues by the Warhawks to steal set three, 25-23.

SET 4
Tied at three in set four, a service error by the Blazers gave the Warhawks the side out, and it sparked a quick 4-0 run to lead 7-3.

Valdosta State did follow with four straight points of their own, and from there, the set went back-and-forth.

Later, tied at 11, an 8-3 run that saw two kills by Jaslyn Montgomery and a service ace by Carly Cooper swelled the lead to 19-14.

Despite VSU making a come-from-behind effort in an attempt to force a fifth set, the Warhawks saw a Madison Kilmer service error give the home team the four-set win in Montgomery.

UP NEXT
The home stand continues with Gulf South Conference foe West Alabama on Thursday night. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside the AUM Athletics Complex.
