MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks volleyball team (3-17, GSC: 2-10) evened the match up through two sets, but the University of West Alabama Tigers (7-12, GSC: 3-9) rallied to win the final two sets to defeat the Warhawks in four on Thursday evening from the AUM Athletics Complex.
Leading the charge for the Warhawks was
Kendall McCain, who recorded her fourth double-digit kill performance in her last five matches with a match-high 18. She also added her fourth double-double in the last five with 11 digs.
Anyaliz Rodriguez had her sixth match in the last eight with double digits in the kill column with 12. Adding four assisted blocks, she scored 14 points on the night.
Freshman
Jaslyn Montgomery had a career-high in kills (10), total blocks (6) and points (13.5) on Thursday night.
Addi Vinson had 23 assists and 11 digs, while
Kiara Vega added 20 assists and 12 digs.
West Alabama had 14 kills from Cadence Goeden to pace the Tigers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
UWA stormed out to a 19-11 lead after a 6-1 run by the Tigers, but AUM responded with a 6-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to 20-17.
Later, trailing 23-19, two straight kills by
Jaslyn Montgomery and a UWA attack error made it 23-22 late in the set, but a Cadence Goeden kill to earn the side out and a Klára Bobánová kill gave the visiting Tigers the 25-22 set one victory.
Set 2
Despite a quick 3-0 run by West Alabama to start the second set, five straight points from AUM flipped the script quickly.
Kendall McCain went back-to-back on kills, while
Addi Vinson and Montgomery teamed up for a block at the net to give the Warhawks a 5-3 lead.
UWA did reclaim the lead 20-19 on a Bobánová kill, but AUM came out strong with three straight points to take a 22-20 lead en route to a 25-22 win in set two to even the match at a set apiece.
AUM smashed 16 kills in the set and held UWA to just eight to pick up the win in the second.
Set 3
Trading the lead early in the third, West Alabama was able to regain the lead and keep it with a 9-2 run to flip a 6-5 deficit to a 14-8 lead.
Despite AUM cutting the set deficit to one, 14-13, after a McCain kill and two service aces by Vinson, UWA used a 6-1 run to make it 20-14.
However, the Warhawks did not go out without a fight, as they rallied off seven straight points to reclaim the lead, 21-20.
Unfortunately, the rally did not phase the Tigers, as they trailed 22-21 and scored the final four points to steal the crucial third set, 25-21 to take the 2-1 match lead.
Set 4
Despite the set score of 25-14, it was tight through the first half of the frame. Tied at 11, the Tigers used a 12-2 run, including eight straight points, to make it a 23-13 lead as they cruised to win the match in four sets.
The Tigers returned the favor in set four that the Warhawks did to them in set two. It was West Alabama out-attacking AUM with 15 kills to six.
