CENTRAL, S.C. – The AUM baseball team won a pair of games on Saturday to finish the weekend with three victories. The Warhawks opened the day with a second-consecutive extra-inning triumph, 10-8, over Southern Wesleyan before securing a 13-11 neutral-site win over Limestone.
Kyle Hipp led the way with three hits, four RBI and scored three times.
Riley Orr also had three hits, including two doubles, and scored four runs.
Tyrese Rooks and
Brendan York both extended their hitting streaks to five games on Saturday.
AUM (3-4) will return to QV Lowe Field on Wednesday against Spring Hill to begin a 4-game homestand. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
Game One – AUM 10, Southern Wesleyan 8 – 10 innings
The Warhawks got a strong outing on the mound from
Payte Williams, who struck out eight in five innings. He allowed just two runs on four hits as he left with a 4-2 lead.
Charlie Bagwell had another quality relief appearance, working three innings in which he allowed just one run on one hit with two strike outs.
Will Passeau (1-1) earned his first win with 1.2 innings of scoreless, 1-hit ball.
Brendan York drove in three and
Tyrese Rooks had a pair of RBI as six different players registered a hit for the Warhawks.
AUM put runners on base in eight different innings. They Warhawks had six-consecutive hits in the second that led to a 4-2 lead. They pushed two more across in the sixth and then single runs in the eighth and ninth for an 8-3 lead.
SWU got a 3-run home run from Marty Grisso in the ninth that sparked a 5-run rally to tie the game at 8-8 and force extra innings.
In the tenth,
Kyle Hipp doubled to left field to drive in
Cole Strachan and then the Orange and Black added another when Grier was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Game Two – AUM 13, Limestone 11
The offense came alive early in the game against Limestone, putting up seven runs in the first three innings.
RH Frankland got the scoring started with a 2-run single in the second. An inning later,
Kyle Hipp greeted LU reliever Charlie Duff with a 3-run blast to left before
Tucker Burns had an RBI groundout and
Tyrese Rooks doubled to center to extend the lead to 7-0.
Limestone came back with a 4-run frame in the fourth to cut into the lead.
Cole Strachan scored on a
Hayden Grier sacrifice fly. The Saints then tied it at 8-8 with four in the sixth.
AUM responded in the top of the seventh with five runs on six hits – including four doubles – to regain momentum with a 13-8 lead.
LU pulled to within 13-11 with a 2-out bases-loaded triple in the ninth before
Lawrence Gallo struck out the final batter to secure the victory for the Warhawks.
Grant Hickman (1-0) allowed one hit in 1.2 innings to earn the victory.
