AUM Sweeps Lee With Offense & Strong Pitching

The Warhawks have won their last three games

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – AUM defeated Lee twice on Saturday to sweep the 3-game series at QV Lowe Field.

AUM pounded out 15 hits and got an 11-10 walk-off win in game one and then saw some strong pitching for a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Warhawks improved to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in Gulf South Conference action. It marked AUM's first sweep of Lee in seven series since moving to Division II status.

Riley Orr led all players with six hits and nine RBI in the doubleheader, while Kyle Hipp collected four base knocks.

Game One – AUM 11, Lee 10
Riley Orr was unstoppable at the plate, going 5-for-6 with seven RBI and two runs, including a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Warhawks to the win.

The Warhawks wasted little time in taking the lead, scoring two in the first inning on an Orr single to right center. Lee starter Dylan Van Meeteran got out of the jam with a double play two batters later.

AUM was on the offensive in the second, loading the bases with no outs. Liam Gilbert scored on Tyrese Rooks' groundout to start the run parade. One pitching change and two batters later, Kyle Hipp grounded into what could have been another double play but hustled down the line to beat the throw as Hayden Grier scored to make it 4-0.

Lee got on the board in the third, getting three consecutive 2-out singles that allowed JJ Williams to score.

AUM got its third 2-run inning in the fourth when Brendan York doubled in the left field corner to score Rooks from first, and then later scored on an Orr single.

The Flames put three on the board in the fifth, highlighted by a 2-run home run by Luke Collier.

Orr got the runs back in the sixth for AUM with a 3-run blast to center – his second of the season, extending the lead to 9-4.

Lee got the three runs back in the seventh, scoring one a wild pitch and then two on a Malachi Cloud single up the middle.

The Flames scored two in the ninth to tie the game at 10, setting up Orr's walk-off heroics.

Charlie Bagwell (1-0) got the final three outs in the top of the ninth to pick up his first win of the season.

Game Two – AUM 7, Lee 4
AUM got strong performances on the mound from Jayce James, Heath Henley and Ryan Slaten to keep the Lee offense in check, holding the Flames to five hits.

AUM got seven hits, scoring twice in the first and third, and three times in the fourth for the 7-4 victory. Henley (1-0) earned the win with two strikeouts in an inning, while Slaten secured his first save with three scoreless innings to close it out.

In the first, Kyle Hipp singled with two outs setting up Riley Orr who belted a 2-run homer to left for a 2-0 lead.

The Flames tied it up with a pair in the third, getting an RBI triple from Luke Collier and an RBI double from Isaiah French.

AUM fought back in the home half, getting a 2-run triple from Zach Dew to regain the lead at 4-2.

After Lee scored one in the top of the fourth, AUM answered right back with a Tyrese Rooks double off the wall that scored Landon Baeder. Tucker Burns scored on a fielder's choice before Zach Dew was hit with the bases loaded to make it a 7-3 margin.

In the fifth, Lee scored a run on a bases loaded double play but that ended the scoring in the contest.

AUM will return to play on Wednesday, Mar. 5 when they travel to Spring Hill for a doubleheader. Both games are scheduled for seven innings with the first one starting at 3 p.m.
