HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team suffered an 18-8 setback to Alabama Huntsville in the first game of a 3-game series at Charger Park on Friday
AUM (7-21, 4-12 Gulf South) had 11 hits, including home runs from
Riley Orr and
Kyle Hipp but committed six errors that led to five unearned runs.
Orr had an outstanding performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Hipp,
Hayden Grier and
Brendan York all had two hits. The top four in the AUM lineup combined for nine hits and scored all eight runs.
UAH (13-13, 6-10) collected 18 hits with four doubles and two home runs.
Payte Williams (0-5) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of relief.
Cole Loftis (2-0) picked up the win with an inning of work in the fifth and was in the lineup when they Chargers scored a run on a double play in the bottom of the fifth to break an 8-8 tie.
After AUM knotted the game at eight in the fifth, UAH scored one in the fifth, three in the sixth, five in the seventh and one in the eighth to end the game via the run rule.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at noon at Charger Park.
