HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The AUM baseball team split a doubleheader at Alabama Huntsville at Charger Park on Saturday. The Warhawks lost the first game 4-1 before snapping a nasty 12-game losing streak with a 11-3 victory in the second contest.
AUM (8-22, 5-13 Gulf South) had just four hits in the first contest before exploding for 10 in the second, including five extra-base hits – the team's second most this season.
Four players had three hits in the doubleheader for AUM. In game two,
RH Frankland went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, along with two RBI and two runs scored.
Game One – UAH 4, AUM 1
For the second-straight game, AUM got on the scoreboard first. In the top of the first, Rooks hit a solo shot to right for his fourth homer of the season.
UAH got a pair of solo shots to open the fourth from Sean Lapinskes and Presley Walker for a 2-1 lead. They added to the lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly by JC Wilburn and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to extend the advantage to 4-1.
Colin Patterson (2-4) threw 102 pitches over seven innings with eight strikeouts to get the win. Corey Hagood picked up his third save with two innings of hitless work.
Griffin Stewart (0-3) suffered the loss by allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. He did collect three strikeouts.
Game Two – AUM 11, UAH 3
The Warhawks again scored first as
Tucker Burns poked a 2-out pitch over the first baseman's head to score
Liam Gilbert in the second inning.
The Chargers got a sac fly an inning later, tying the game at 1-1. In the third, Wilburn hit a grounder deep to short and beat out
Brendan York's throw as Walker scored from third.
In the fourth,
RH Frankland put a hard liner under the first baseman's glove that drove in
Zach Dew from third to tie it up at 2-2. Rooks followed three batters last as a drove in a pair with two outs on a slow roller through the right side, putting the Warhawks up 4-2.
Will Noles opened the bottom of the fourth with a home run, bringing the Chargers to within a run at 4-3.
The Warhawks put up another 3-run inning in the fifth as they stretched their lead to 7-3.
Riley Orr and
Zach Dew had back-to-back doubles in the fifth to give the Orange and Black a 5-3 margin. Dew scored a batter later when a ground ball up the middle off
Liam Gilbert's bat was thrown wild to first. Gilbert scored on a wild pitch after moving to third on a double by Franklin.
AUM put up a third-consecutive 3-run inning in the sixth, scoring all three runs with no outs. Rooks crossed home in the sixth, scoring from first on a York sacrifice bunt that saw the throw go down the right field line. Two batters later, Orr drove in Rooks as he connected on his second double of the game. They finished the scoring barrage when
Kyle Hipp scored a Dew sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, Frankland led off with a bomb down the right field line for his first homer of the season.
Brett Pitts (1-1) earned the win in relief, working 2.2 innings of 1-hit ball.
AUM will continue play with a midweek contest at Columbus State on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch at Burger King Stadium is at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
