Softball sweeps Columbus State in Tuesday's doubleheader

Chelisa Newsome leads the GSC with a 1.44 ERA

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No. 5 Auburn University at Montgomery Softball (22-7, 13-5) swept Columbus State (24-13, 5-3) in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday.  

AUM won the first game 2-1 and had just one hit as a team. Reese Cauley earned her 10th win of the season.

Chelisa Newsome tossed a complete game shutout to secure the sweep in Tuesday doubleheader with Columbus State. AUM won the second game 6-0. 

Game 1 – AUM 2, CSU 1

Cauley started in the circle for AUM and improved to 10-3 on the year. She tossed seven innings and allowed just three hits and one run. She also totaled four strikeouts. 

Columbus state hit a solo homerun in the top of the third to take a one-run lead. 

The Warhawks responded with a pair in the bottom half of the inning to take the 2-1 lead. The Cougars committed a defensive error that allowed AUM to jump ahead. 

Cauley would hold off Columbus State for four straight innings to hold on for the win. Her 10 wins on the year are tied for the sixth most in the GSC, while her 1.81 ERA is the third lowest in the league. 

Game 2 – AUM 6, CSU 0

A well-balanced offensive attack for the Warhawks as all nine starters recorded a hit in game number two of the doubleheader. 

AUM started the game with a run in the bottom of the first to take an early one-run lead. They also added two more in the second after three consecutive this to start the inning. Machado started the inning off with a single, followed by Faith Wheat and Rebecca Komers. Komers and Jasmine Sneed picked up the RBI to make it 3-0 in favor of AUM.

In the fourth, the Warhawks stretched the lead to four after a well-executed first and third baserunning play. Wheat led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base and was advanced to third on a bunt single from Sneed to setup the first and third play. 

Newsome tossed a complete game shutout to get her 10th win of the season as well. Newsome holds a 1.44 ERA to lead the GSC. In her seven innings, she allowed just one hit.

Komers made it a five-run lead with a RBI double in the sixth, followed by an RBI single from Chloe Derrick to increase it to 6-0.

In the seventh, Newsome retired the Cougars in order, to take the 6-0 victory and the sweep of Tuesday's, midweek doubleheader. 

Up Next

AUM will travel to Pensacola and take on West Florida this weekend. The game times have shifted and it will now be a Friday doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. CT and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. West Florida stands ahead of AUM in the conference standings at 14-4 in GSC play so far.
