Softball sweeps Delta State in Thursday’s Doubleheader

CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 6 Auburn University at Montgomery Softball (31-9, 22-7) swept the doubleheader on Saturday at Delta State (12-29, 5-22).

In game one, AUM completed the comeback victory and won the game in extra innings with four runs in the ninth inning. The second game featured 11 runs in the fourth inning for AUM and their sixth-consecutive Gulf South Conference series win.   

AUM is under consideration for the NCAA South Region Tournament. The first rankings came out on Wednesday, April 16 and the second batch of ranking will release on Wednesday, April 23. 

Game 1 – AUM 5, Union 1

AUM's four runs in the ninth inning gave them the series opener victory at Delta State. Rebecca Komers and Reese Cauley went back-to-back with homeruns. Komers delivered a two-run shot followed by Cauley's solo shot.

Delta State took the first lead of the game with a run in the second inning. AUM outhit Delta State 11-3 in the series opener and left 11 runners on-base. The Warhawks were finally able to get on the board and tie the game in the sixth inning. 

In the sixth, Lexie Bullock's run tied the game at one before the series opener was sent into extra innings. 

Reese Cauley started in the circle for the Warhawks and tossed nine innings while allowing just three hits and one run. She was also 3-5 at the plate with a homerun and RBI.
In the ninth inning, AUM went ahead on a run scored by Baynes. The Delta State defensive committed a costly throwing error that allowed Baynes to come in to score and Haley Ann Frank to advance to second. Komers would then hit a two-run homerun to score two, followed by a Cauley solo homerun. 

Cauley then returned to the mound for the ninth inning and shut the door on the Lady Statesman. 

Baynes extended her hitting streak to eight games with a hit in both games of the doubleheader on Thursday.

Game 2 – AUM 13, Union 4

The Warhawks big fourth inning that featured 11 runs gave them the sweep of Saturday's doubleheader and their sixth-consecutive Gulf South Conference series win.AUM started off the second game with two runs in the first inning to jump ahead of Delta State early. Delta State committed three errors in the first inning that led to the two runs. Frank singled and picked up an RBI for the first run of the game that scored Baynes. 

The GSC leader in ERA started in the circle for AUM and Chelisa Newsome.

In the fourth inning, AUM extended the lead to 13 with 11 runs in the inning. Freshman Meredith Kellum started the scoring with an RBI and ended the scoring with a three-run homerun. Then the Warhawks went back-to-back for the second time on Thursday with homeruns from Arianna Machado and Jasmine Sneed. Komers also drove in a pair that scored Frank and Baynes, who lead the team in runs scored this season. Faith Wheat would then drive a double to center and score two, Bella Santos and Komers. 

Delta State got on the board with three runs in the fourth inning and run in the fifth inning. 

AUM hit a game-high, three home runs as a team in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader. 

Newsome allowed no runs and no hits in her three innings of work. Morgan Ferguson took over in the fourth inning and made her first appearance of the season
