MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No. 6 Auburn University at Montgomery Softball (33-9, 24-7) won the series opener on Friday against Montevallo to clinch the GSC Regular Season title outright.
Reese Cauley tossed a seven-inning shutout to give AUM the program's third regular season title of the last five years. The Warhawks clinched the title outright with Friday's win over the Falcons and will be the No.1 seed in next week's GSC Championship.
Since taking over as head coach,
Scottie Wilkes Laney holds 117-42 record and has led the program to a GSC regular season title, a GSC Tournament Championship and a NCAA South Regional Championship.
Cauley allowed just one hit in her seven-inning shutout and now holds a 1.41 ERA on the season to rank top 20 nationally. AUM now has 13 shutouts on the season for the eighth most in Division II.
The Warhawks pitching staff also ranks fifth nationally in WHIP at .96 with Cauley leading the way at .82 and top ten nationally in ERA at 1.81.
Friday's game got underway with a run in the top of the first to put AUM 1-0.
Haley Ann Frank reached on a bunt and came in to score on a RBI single from
Lexi Love. Love is now tied for the team lead in RBIs with 30 and Frank leads the team with 36 runs scored so far.
AUM got hits offensively in the series opener from Frank, Love and
Faith Wheat.
Saturday's doubleheader will close out the regular season for the Warhawks. The Senior Day ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. CT with first-pitch set for noon.
AUM ranked fourth in the latest NCAA South Region rankings. The next batch of rankings will release on Wednesday, April 30.
