MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The AUM baseball team split a doubleheader with Valdosta State at QV Lowe Field on Saturday, dropping the first game 6-3 before battling back for a 7-3 victory in the second contest.
Riley Orr had a pair of hits in each game while
Tucker Burns,
Kyle Hipp and
Brendan York had two apiece on the day.
VSU (22-16, 16-7 Gulf South) had 11 hits in the opening contest but just six in the evening matchup. AUM (11-26, 8-16) had just six hits in game one before 10 hits in the second battle.
AUM will be on the road for the next two weeks, taking on an 8-game road stretch that includes GSC weekends at Union and Delta State. The Warhakws will travel to Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday, taking on the Hurricanes at 5 p.m. Central Time.
Game One - VSU 6, AUM 3
VSU scored the first six runs in the game, opening up a 6-0 lead after four and a half innings. The Warhawks got one in the bottom of the fifth on Burns' first home run of the season and then two more in the ninth but left nine men on base in the game.
Hunter Booth (5-4) went eight plus innings with six strikeouts, while allowing three runs on six hits and three walks.
Andres Natera had three hits for the Blazers and was one of three players with one RBI.
Griffin Stewart (0-5) allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings for AUM.
Game Two - AUM 7, VSU 3
AUM fell behind 2-0 before scoring two in the third and five in the sixth to create a 7-2 cushion.
The Warhawks scored on a bases loaded double play in the third before
Kyle Hipp drove in
Tyrese Rooks on a single two batters later.
In the sixth,
Cole Strachan opened the inning with a home run when he delivered a 0-2 pitch over the wall in left for a 3-2 lead. After the next two batters got out, the Warhawks loaded the bases with a single, walk and hit batter. Hipp singled in two runs before
Riley Orr followed with an 2-run double to stretch the margin to 7-2.
After the first two Blazers reached in the seventh,
Charlie Bagwell came on and struck out three of the four batters he faced to secure the game for the Warhawks.
Clay Slagle (2-1) scattered seven hits in 5.1 innings to grab the win.
