Softball Drops Heartbreaker To UWF In GSC Championship Game

The Warhawks will find out their NCAA regional assignment on Monday morning

OXFORD, Ala. – The No. 6 AUM softball team dropped a 7-6 walk off heart breaker to West Florida in the Gulf South Conference Championship game at Choccolocco Park on Sunday.

AUM (37-11) moved to 3-1 in championship contests as it was looking to secure its fourth tournament title in the last five years. The Warhawks entered the week fourth in the most recent NCAA South Region ranking and will learn their NCAA postseason assignment on Monday at 9 a.m. when the 64-team field is announced on ncaa.com.

On Sunday, Jasmine Sneed had a team-best three hits, while Lexi Love and Rebecca Komers had two each.

AUM lumped ahead early, scoring a pair in the first and third innings, and one on a wild pitch in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead. Lexie Bullock hit a 2-run single in the opening frame before Love got an opposite-field, 2-run inside the park home run in the third. Cauley plated the first of her two scores on a wild pitch in the fourth.

UWF scored three in the fifth to pull within two before Cauley hit a solo home run to start the sixth. It was her team-best sixth long ball of the season.

After neither team scored in their next two at-bats, UWF played small ball and loaded the bases with three-consecutive bunt singles before Olivia Keith popped out to third. Erin Moon then drove in a run with a single before Nevaeh Hayes singled up the middle to bring in the final two runs for the Argonauts.

Cauley went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Chelisa Newsome (15-5) came on in relief in the sixth and suffered the loss after allowing three runs in an inning of work.

Cauley, Chloe Baynes and Arianna Machado were voted onto the All-Tournament Team

AUM is now 18-4 all-time in five GSC Championship appearances for a league-best .818 winning percentage.
