MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team (2-1-1) found a late goal to earn a 1-1 draw with Lander University on Senior Night.
The Bearcats (0-0-3) applied early pressure on the Warhawks' defense with a trio of shots in the match's opening minutes, including one shot on target punched away by AUM goalkeeper
Viktor Rosenkrantz. Pressure from Lander continued throughout the first half of the match, as the visitors totaled nine shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Offensively, the Bearcats broke through onto the scoreboard in the 34th minute. Zach Meyer connected on a half-field boot that skipped into the 18-yard box and Orran Mushet snuck a right-footed finish past Rosenkrantz to stake the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Neither side mustered a realistic chance the rest of the first half, as Lander took the 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
Lander's offensive pressure continued to open up the second half of action, but it was the orange-and-black that struck for the next goal. The AUM offense found late life in the 75th minute on the right foot of
Robiston Lukau, as he dribbled toward the middle of field and struck the game-tying goal.
Lander's last look at a goal came in the 88th minute when Lander's Carson Graves raced to a one-on-one opportunity with AUM goalkeeper
Matteo Maccagni, but Maccagni's clutch save kept the game tied.
Lander outshot AUM 16-9, with a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. A pair of AUM goalkeepers, Rosenkrantz and Maccagni, combined to make eight saves.
The Warhawks, who are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, host their third consecutive home match on Wednesday, September 17 at 2:30 p.m. as they welcome Carson-Newman University to close out the non-conference slate. The match is AUM's annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, and there will also be free giveaways for the first 50 students in attendance.
