#20 Warhawks Shutdown Trevecca Nazarene in Conference Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the second consecutive game, Noah Fernandes and Benjamin Hoffmann tallied goals as the #20 Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawk men's soccer team (4-1-1, GSC: 1-0) downed the Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans (3-2-1, GSC: 1-2) 2-0 to open Gulf South Conference play.

COACH THORNE'S COMMENT'S
"Very good three points on the road. Now we rest and look forward to another battle Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Warhawks almost immediately took a 1-0 lead, as Fernandes converted a Hoffmann assist to give the visitors the early advantage.

AUM applied steady pressure on the Trevecca Nazarene defense all night, beginning in the first minute of the match.

The Warhawks, ranked No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, took seven shots in the first half and nearly found another goal.

The Trojans made a pair of first half saves and the Warhawks hit the crossbar and pinged a shot off the post but were unable to crack the scoreboard again in the first half.

Second Half
The second half of the match followed much of the same script, as AUM continued its offensive pressure in the second half. The Warhawks outshot the Trojans 12-5 in the second half, including a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal.

AUM broke through to put the match out of reach in the 76th minute. Hoffmann's team-leading fourth goal of the season, set up by Sean O'Donnell, pushed the lead to 2-0.

Trevecca Nazarene had its lone shot attempt of the final five minutes blocked as AUM preserved its third shutout of the campaign.

NOTABLES
  • AUM outshot TNU 20-12 in the match, including 8-1 in shots on goal.
  • Matteo Maccagni picked up the third win of his debut collegiate season in goal. He made one save to anchor to clean sheet.
  • Fernandes' goal marked his third of the season, which is good for second on the team in that category, while O'Donnell registered his first assist of the season.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks remain on the road in GSC play on Sunday, September 28th as they visit Cleveland, Tenn. and Lee University in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
