MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks men's tennis team (2-3, GSC: 1-0) took down the Christian Brothers Buccaneers (1-5, GSC; 0-2) 4-2 on Friday afternoon to earn its first Gulf South Conference victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles
Giuseppe Bonaiuti and
Jami Savolainen began the day strong, defeating CBU's Benjamin Hanriot and Alex Randoux 6-2 at the No. 1 position. The Buccs evened it out with a 6-4 decision at the No. 3 spot before
Guillermo Vedia Sanchez and
Daniel Margoulis beat the Buccs' tandem of Tristian Kelly and Justin Martin 6-4 at the No. 3 slot to claim the doubles point for the Warhawks.
Singles
Competing at the No. 2 position, Savolainen grabbed AUM the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over CBU's Randoux. Bonaiuti followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles spot over Christian Brothers' Hanriot.
The Buccs picked up wins at the No. 3 & 4 slots, however,
Harry McDonagh's 6-0, 6-2 victory over CBU's Martin at the No. 5 position claimed the clinching point for the Warhawks.
Lucas Rosvall's No. 6 match was left unfinished while he led 6-1, 3-1.
This 4-2 victory over Christian Brothers secured AUM its first conference win of the season and sets the pace for the remainder of conference play.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will step away from Gulf South Conference play for its next six contests, all coming on the road against nonconference opponents. The stretch begins on Monday, February 23, with a 10 a.m. matchup against Embry-Riddle in Columbus, Georgia.
