CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks softball team (12-2, GSC: 2-2) took down the Lee Flames (5-15, GSC: 0-4) with a 9-5 victory on Friday afternoon from the Stanley Butler Softball Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flames struck first behind a two-RBI single from Alyson Jarvi in the bottom of the first frame.
Â
The Warhawks didn't let this deter them, responding in the top of the third inning.
Olivia Watkins delivered a clutch two-RBI double to spark the offense, driving in
Chloe Baynes and
Rebecca Komers after both reached base with singles earlier in the frame.
Â
Lee brought its total to three runs in the bottom of the inning with an RBI base hit from Madison Pinzon.
Â
The orange and black continued to add to its advantage in the fifth inning. Baynes worked a walk and quickly swiped second to move into scoring position. Komers then reached on a Lee error, allowing Baynes to advance to third and put runners on the corners. After Komers stole second to place two in scoring position, Watkins launched a deep three-run home run over the left-field wall, stretching AUM's lead to 5-3.
Â
The top of the sixth inning featured base knocks from
Gracie Suggs' and
Gabbi Barnowsky to set a pair of runners on base with two outs. Baynes was the next to bat and hit a single to second base, allowing Suggs to score from second base.
Â
With two runners on board, Komers took her turn nailing one over the left field wall, pushing the Warhawks' lead to 9-5.
Â
With
Alivia Messick holding down the circle in the seventh inning, the orange and black went on to close out game one with a 9-5 victory over the Flames.Â
