CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The No. 4 Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks softball team (13-3, GSC: 3-3) split its Gulf South Conference doubleheader with the Lee Flames (6-16, GSC: 1-5) securing the series win with a 13-4 victory before falling 3-4 in a tight nine-inning battle to close out the series on Saturday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game #1 | AUM 13, Lee 4
Chloe Baynes was the first batter of the day and worked a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Rebecca Komers then singled to right field, plating Baynes and putting the Warhawks on the board first.
Â
Lee responded in the bottom of the frame behind Hailey Simco's two-run homer that gave the Flames the lead.
Â
The top of the second inning featured a strong two-out double from
Jasmine Sneed.
Gabbi Barnowsky singed while Sneed ran to third to place runners on the corners. Barnowsky stole second base and a Flames' throwing error kept her safe at second and allowed Sneed to score. Not long after, a single from Baynes completed Barnowsky's trip around the diamond and put the Warhawks back in front, 3-2.
Â
A scoreless third inning brought the game to the top of the fourth where the orange and black tacked on five more runs behind base hits from
Ansley Watson, Barnowsky, and Baynes followed by a three-run bomb from Komers.
Â
With
Reese Cauley holding her ground in the circle, she retired the Flames in order to close out the fourth frame.
Â
AUM continued to push ahead as Sneed scored again in the top of the fifth inning and Lee was held scoreless in the bottom.
Â
A two-RBI double from Lee's Tenslee Wilson cut the Warhawks' lead to 9-4, however, extra base hits from
Shelby Morgan and
Meredith Kellum helped the orange and black take another four runs in the seventh inning.
Â
Cauley handled the last few batters in the bottom of the frame, giving the Warhawks a 13-4 victory and the series win.

Â
Lee's Alyson Jarvi responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the second to even the score.
Â
Neither team added any runs in the third, bringing us to the top of the fourth where AUM would once again take the advantage.
Karris Rhine doubled to left center field before advancing to third on the next at-bat. This set the stage for
Chloe Hollon's RBI single, plating Rhine and giving AUM a 2-1 lead.
Â
Baynes, who had been hitting well all day, cranked a triple to center field in the top of the fifth inning before stealing home to give AUM a 3-1 cushion.
Â
The Flames answered in the sixth frame after stringing some hits together to even the score at three runs apiece.
