AUM Secure Doubles Point, Fall 4-2 to UT Tyler Patriots

TYLER, Tx. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team concluded competition at the GSC/Lone Star Crossover Tournament on Sunday morning, falling 4-2 to No. 20 UT Tyler at the Summers Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas. Facing the nationally ranked Patriots, the Warhawks battled through doubles and singles play but came up just short in the tightly contested matchup. 

Doubles 
AUM opened the match by capturing the doubles point against the Patriots, winning two of three courts. At No. 1 doubles, Yona Bancarel and Natalia Gorzny gave UT Tyler the early advantage with a 6-2 win over Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa

The orange and black quickly responded at No. 2 doubles, where Mercedes Garcia Cid and Allison Blanco earned a 6-4 victory over Maria Antonio Ortega and Carla Rodier to even the doubles tally. 

The doubles point was secured at No. 3 doubles, where Ana Clara Campigotto and Valeria Garcia Chavez closed out with a 6-4 score to give AUM the early match lead. 

Singles 
The Patriots secured the team victory with four singles wins, overcoming AUM's early doubles momentum. Nagisa Yonezawa battled Maria Antonio Ortega at the No. 3 spot but was defeated 6-4, 6-2, securing the fourth point of the afternoon for UT Tyler to even the overall score at 1-1. At the No. 1 position, Melissa Yakup Pour faced Yona Bancarel and fell 6-0, 6-2.  

Allison Blanco earned a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Carla Rodier 7-5, 6-0 to put AUM on the board in singles play. Mercedes Garcia Cid dropped a 7-5, 6-0 decision to Natalia Gorzny at the No. 2 position. 

At No. 5 singles, Ana Clara Campigotto pushed Paula Castellanos in the second set before falling 6-2, 7-5. 

Valeria Garcia Chavez opened strong at the No. 6 position against Luisa Moraes, going 7-6  

The No. 6 singles match went unfinished after Valeria Garcia Chavez led Luisa Moraes.

The Warhawks will travel back east to battle against Middle Georgia State in Macon, Georgia on Friday, March 6 at noon.
