MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 6 Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks softball team (25-4, GSC: 10-4) dominated its Gulf South Conference doubleheader with the UAH Chargers (21-12, GSC: 7-7) securing the series win with a tight 2-1 victory the first game and an impressive 6-2 finish to finalize the second game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game #1 AUM 2, UAH 1
Both sides remained at a stalemate until the sixth inning, where the Chargers took initiative to be the first to score a run. With the help of a single to center field, the pitch runner, Alyssa Butts, scored, the UAH taking a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Jasmine Sneed kicked off the inning with a single to center field.
Chloe Baynes then followed with a walk, which advanced Sneed to second base. Both players moved 60 feet on a wild pitch shortly after.
Gabbi Barnowsky struck out swinging and was thrown out at first, which prompted Sneed to attempt to advance home, resulting in another out, leaving Baynes to advance to third. With two outs,
Rebecca Komers homered, plating herself and Baynes, claiming the Warhawks two runs to secure the win.
Throughout the seven innings pitched,
Reese Cauley only allowed two hits, one run, and tallied nine strikeouts.
Game #1 Notables
Game #2 AUM 6, UAH 2
Similar to game one, UAH was the first to score in the top of the second inning, after Hannah Temple walked, followed by Kylee Smith hitting a triple to left center, which put the Chargers on the board at 1-0.
Two more innings would pass before the Warhawks would answer. In the bottom of the fourth, Olivia Watkins singled to left field. Karris Rhine tripled down the right field line, which scored Watkins, knotting the score at 1-1. The first baseman, Kennedy Sevcik had delivered an RBI, grounding out to the pitcher, which allowed Rhine to score and allowing the Warhawks to take the lead at 2-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Chargers responded through a sacrifice fly to center field with bases loaded, adding a run to the scoreboard and tying the score again at 2-2.
Jasmine Sneed led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a home run launched over center field. Her fourth of the season. Chloe Baynes followed by singling to shortstop. Gabbi Barnowsky popped up to shortstop and Rebecca Komers advanced to first base after she was hit by a pitch.
Watkins stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field, allowing Komers and Baynes to score. AUM took the lead at 5-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kennedy Sevik singled to center field on her first pitch, followed by Ansley Watson singling to third base. Gracie Mason entered the game to pinch run for Watson, while Shelby Morgan entered to pinch run for Sevcik. Chloe Baynes reached second base on a fielder's choice, which allowed Morgan to score, putting the Warhawks up 6-2.
