AUM Drops DH to UAH in High-Scoring Saturday Slate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks baseball team (8-21, GSC: 4-14) dropped a pair of games to the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers (11-15, GSC: 8-9) on Saturday evening, falling 20-9 in game one before a tight 13-11 game three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One; AUM 9; UAH 20
Both the Warhawks and UAH were held in check through the first two frames, as four Chargers came to the plate, and AUM's Brice Ainsworth, Cannon Miller, and Christopher McNeill went down in order.

The orange and black broke through in the third inning starting with a single from left fielder Landon Baeder. John Kiebler delivered a single before an error by UAH allowed Brice Ainsworth to reach and load the bases.

Miller then came up clutch, driving a double to left field that cleared the bases and put AUM ahead 3-0. McNeill followed with a single, and Tucker Burns added an RBI on a fielder's choice, his 15th of the season. Chance Sweeney later delivered an RBI double to cap a five-run inning and give the Warhawks a 5-0 advantage.

Alabama Huntsville responded in a big way in the fourth inning, cutting into the deficit, and making it 5-2. Short stop, Hugh Windle delivered a two-RBI double before a home run was hit to give the Chargers their first lead at 6-5. The inning continued for UAH as the team pushed the lead to 8-5.

The Chargers kept the pressure on in the fifth inning and added eight more runs, extending the lead to 16-5, delivering six hits in the top of the frame.

AUM answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, as McNeill doubled and Burns singled to set up an RBI single from Sweeney. Camden Suggs added a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 16-7.

The Warhawks continued to battle in the seventh when Kyle Hipp connected on a solo home run to left field. The Chargers plated four runs in the eighth, extending their lead to 20-8.

In the eighth, AUM drove in one more run, putting the score at 20-9, but the Warhawks  ultimately fell 20-9 in game two of the series, concluding after eight innings.

Game Two; AUM 11; UAH 13
The Warhawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Hipp and Sweeney each got on with base hits. A throwing error on UAH's pitcher allowed runners to advance, scoring Hipp and give AUM a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers evened it up in the top of the fourth frame with an RBI triple.

Burns led off the bottom of the fourth with a strong double to left field before Hipp mirrored his double to bring Burns in to score. This gave the orange and black some momentum as Sweeney, Baeder, and Revera each picked up base hits to combine for three more runs for AUM and set the orange and black's lead at 5-1.

UAH answered quickly with four runs in the top of the fifth, using five hits and a three-RBI knock despite an AUM double play. The Chargers followed with four more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Seth Staggs and an AUM error, to take a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth.

Kiebler and Revera drew walks to hold two runners on base, when Suggs' double to right field allowed both runners to score and cut the Chargers' lead to 9-7.

Another four-run inning for the opponents brought its lead to 13-7, forcing the Warhawks to make something happen in the bottom of the seventh inning, due to the league's seven-inning rule in game three.

McNeill opened the frame with a double, and Hipp's base hit landed runners on the corners. Sweeny then reached first base on a fielding error, allowing Hipp to move to second and Sweeny to score. Not long after, Kiebler stepped up to the plate a drilled a two-RBI double to left field. Revera followed with a base hit, however, AUM's late efforts wouldn't be enough to stop the Chargers from taking a 13-11 game three win.
