MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team (5-9; GSC: 2-2) dropped a 5-2 decision to undefeated No. 6 Mississippi College Choctaws (16-0; GSC: 5-0) on Sunday afternoon at the AUM Tennis Complex.
Doubles
Mississippi College claimed the doubles point with wins on Courts 3 and 2. At No. 3 doubles, Mercedes Garcia Cid and Allison Blanco fell 6-3 to Rocio Martinez and Anna Hudson. The point was decided shortly after on Court 2, where Valeria Garcia Chavez and Ana Clara Campigotto fought to stay within striking distance but ultimately dropped a 6-4 decision to Katharina Weber and Rune Van Wyk, giving Mississippi College the 1-0 lead.
At the top spot, the nationally ranked duo of No. 30 Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa were locked in a tightly contested battle with No. 26 Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett. The match was even at 4-4 before going unfinished once the doubles point had been decided.
Singles
The Choctaws extended its lead in singles play on Court 5 where Anna Hudson delivered a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ana Clara Campigotto to make it 2-0. Mississippi College added another point at No. 3 singles, as Nagisa Yonezawa fell 6-0, 6-4.
AUM responded at the top of the lineup where No. 16 Melissa Yakup Pour bounced back after dropping the second set to secure a gritty three-set win over No. 5 Emily Buchanan, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles, putting the Warhawks on the board, 3-1.
Mississippi College answered at No. 4 singles, where Allison Blanco and Rune Van Wyk split the first two sets, but Blanco fell just short in the decider, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Mercedes Garcia Cid delivered another strong performance at No. 2 singles. Garcia Cid outlasted Rocio Martinez in a tightly contested three-set match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, earning AUM its second point of the afternoon.
In the final match on Court 6, Valeria Garcia Chavez battled but was unable to overcome Ann Cabot Stockett, falling 6-0, 6-2 to close out the 5-2 result.
