AUM Drops Road Match to No. 17 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team (5-10; GSC: 2-3) fell 5-2 to No. 17 Valdosta State (7-4; GSC: 4-0) in Gulf South Conference action on the road at the VSU Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.  

Doubles 
The AUM Warhawks opened doubles play with a win at the top spot. The No. 27-ranked duo of Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa delivered a commanding 6-1 victory over Valdosta State's No. 48-ranked pair of Lena Beckx and Milica Prokic. 

Valdosta State responded on Court 3, where Mercedes Garcia Cid and Allison Blanco fell 6-4 to the Blazers. The doubles point came down to Court 2, where Ana Clara Campigotto and Valeria Garcia Chavez battled but ultimately dropped a 6-2 decision to Ivana Castillo and Charleigh Fay, giving Valdosta the early 1-0 advantage. 

Singles 
Valdosta State carried its momentum into singles play, beginning on Court 5 where Ana Clara Campigotto fell 6-3, 6-4, extending the Blazers' lead to 2-0. On singles No. 4, Nagisa Yonezawa faced Charleigh Fay, dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision as Valdosta State went ahead 3-0 on the Warhawks. 

The Blazers added another point at No. 2 singles, where Milica Prokic defeated Sofia Neri 6-2, 7-5. 

AUM answered on Court 6, where Valeria Garcia Chavez delivered a strong performance, earning a straight-set victory over Ena Arnautovic, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), to put the Warhawks on the board at 4-1.  

At No. 3 singles, Mercedes Garcia Cid battled in one of the most competitive matches of the afternoon. After forcing a third set, Garcia Cid ultimately fell in a tightly contested match tiebreak to No. 53 Ivana Castillo, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, clinching the match for the Blazers. 

The final match to finish came at the top of the lineup, where No. 9 Melissa Yakup Pour capped the day with an impressive straight-set win over Lena Beckx, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, securing AUM's second point in the 5-2 decision. 

Up Next 
The Warhawks will stay on the road and travel to Pensacola, Florida to play against the No. 2 West Florida Argonauts on Wednesday, April 1, with the match set for 1 pm.
