MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A late push from the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team (5-14; GSC: 1-9) fell just short Friday evening, as the Warhawks dropped game one of the three-game series to the Mississippi College Choctaws (12-9; GSC: 7-3), 6–4, at the AUM Baseball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mississippi College struck first in the opening inning when the Choctaws led off with a single and later scored, giving the Choctaws a 1–0 lead. The Warhawks were retired in order in the bottom half of the inning, and both teams were held scoreless in the second.
The Choctaws added another run in the third with the help of a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the advantage to 2–0. AUM was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, and both pitching staffs continued to keep the game quiet offensively through the fourth and fifth frames.
Mississippi College stretched its lead in the sixth inning as left fielder, JT Thigpen doubled to start the frame and later scored on an RBI single, making it 3–0. The Choctaws then broke the game open in the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits. With the bases loaded, Mississippi College drew a walk to force in a run before the designated hitter, Will Langston delivered a two-RBI single to left center to give the Choctaws a 6–0 lead.
AUM found momentum in the eighth inning when John Kiebler and Anderson Harris recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on base. Kurt Kizer followed with a single through the left side that plated both runners and cut the deficit to 6–2.
The Warhawks threatened again in the ninth, as Christopher McNeill was hit by a pitch and Luke Turner doubled down the right-field line to put runners at second and third. Will Passeau later reached on a throwing error by the third baseman that brought home McNeill, and a passed ball allowed Turner to score, trimming the lead to 6–4 before Mississippi College recorded the final outs to secure the win.
