MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team (11-28; GSC: 6-19) secured a 9-2 victory over the Union Bulldogs (15-23; GSC: 7-18) on Friday afternoon at the AUM Baseball Complex, using a dominant six-run fifth inning to pull away.
AUM struck first in the second inning after short stop Tucker Burns worked a walk and moved into scoring position from Brice Ainsworth's single. Landon Baeder brought Burns home with an RBI groundout to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks added to their advantage as Burns delivered his second hit of the evening, a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring both Luke Turner and catcher Cannon Miller to extend the lead to 3-0.
AUM broke the game open in the fifth inning with an explosive six-run frame on seven hits. Miller jumpstarted the rally with a leadoff double, followed by an RBI double from Turner, taking the lead to 4-0. Burns continued his strong day at the plate with another RBI double, while Ainsworth kept the momentum going with a base hit. Chance Sweeney delivered a key two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Ainsworth and Burns, putting the Warhawks ahead 7-0. AUM continued to pile on as Christopher McNeill and Miller each added RBI singles, stretching the lead to 9-0 to close the inning.
The Bulldogs responded in the sixth inning with an RBI groundout, scoring the first baseman, Grant Ross, to make it 9-1. Union added a solo home run in the ninth to make it 9-2, but AUM's pitching staff remained in control throughout. The Warhawks limited Union to just two runs despite multiple baserunners, closing out the 9-2 win.
Notables
AUM recorded nine runs, six walks, and 12 hits, five of those hits being doubles in the win against Union.
Tucker Burns led Warhawks offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, including two doubles.
Cannon Miller scored two runs, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.
Luke Turner went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a walk, and two runs scored.
Chance Sweeney contributed two hits and two RBI, while also adding a stolen base.
Brice Ainsworth recorded a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
AUM's pitching staff held Union to two runs on 10 hits, limiting damage despite 10 runners left on base, and striking out six.
Defensively, the Warhawks had zero errors, compared to three by Union.
