CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Auburn University at Montgomery women's tennis team (5-12; GSC: 2-5) fell 5-2 to No. 29 Lee (8-5; GSC: 4-3) in Gulf South Conference action on the road Friday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Doubles
In doubles action, at the No. 2 position, Sofia Neri and Mercedes Garcia Cid fell 6-2 to Maria Duarte and Aliyah Dwyer. The Warhawks responded at No. 3, as Ana Clara Campigotto and Valeria Garcia delivered a 6-3 win over Jasmine Ibegbulam and Nicolette Fuhr.
The point came down to the top court, where the No. 25-ranked duo of Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa battled Lee's No. 50-ranked pair of Rima Yoshida and Andrea Pascual. In a tightly contested tiebreak, Yakup Pour and Yonezawa pulled out a 7-6 (16-14) victory to secure the doubles point for the AUM Warhawks.
Singles
In singles play, Lee responded quickly to take control of the match, beginning at the No. 2 position where Sofia Neri fell 6-0, 6-2 to No. 66 Andrea Pascual to even the score at 1-1. At the top spot, No. 10 Melissa Yakup Pour faced No. 24 Rima Yoshida in a ranked showdown, taking the opening set before Yoshida rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory to give the Flames the lead at 2-1.
Mercedes Garcia Cid battled at No. 3 against Aliyah Dwyer, opening with a strong first set before dropping a tight three-set decision, 6-3, 5-7, 3-6, as Lee extended its advantage. The Warhawks picked up their lone singles point at the No. 4 position, where Nagisa Yonezawa responded after dropping the first set to defeat Vitoria Maximiliano 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 6, Valeria Garcia Chavez pushed her match to the limit but came up short in a tiebreak, falling 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) to Nicolette Fuhr. Ana Clara Campigotto rounded out the lineup at No. 5, battling in a tightly contested match before dropping a 7-6, 7-5 decision to Maria Duarte, as Lee secured the 5-2 final.
