MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team (34-7; GSC: 17-7) secured a 3-0 victory over the Union Lady Bulldogs (14-25; GSC: 7-17) on Saturday afternoon at the AUM Softball Complex, clinching the series win. After taking game one and dropping the second contest, the Warhawks responded with a shutout performance in the finale
COACH WILKES LANEY'S COMMENTS
"If we could have drawn this weekend up, it would have gone a little differently, but in the end, we got the series win. We kicked ourselves in the foot defensively. We definitely should have played better on that side of the ball, but we will learn from it."
HOW IT HAPPENED
AUM opened the scoring in the second inning Olivia Watkin's led off with a double to right center. Watkins moved to third on a wild pitch before Gracie Suggs brought her home with an RBI ground ball, her eighth of the season, giving the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
AUM added to its lead in the third inning as Chloe Baynes worked a walk to reach base. Following a fielder's choice off the bat of Gabbi Barnowsky, Barnowsky took over at first and later came around to score on Rebecca Komers' tenth double of the season, pushing the Warhawks' advantage to 2-0.
AUM created separation in the sixth inning as Barnowsky started things with a single, and Komers followed with another hit to put runners on the corners. Watkins delivered again with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Barnowsky for the second time of the game, and stretching the lead to 3-0.
In the circle, for the Warhawks, Reese Cauley was able to limit the Lady Bulldogs to minimal offensive production and worked out of the few threats. Union put runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Warhawks' defense held strong to keep them off the board. A clean seventh inning sealed the 3-0 win and the series victory for AUM.
