Men’s Tennis Closes Out Season at GSC Championship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks men's tennis team (8-11, GSC: 5-3) brought its 2025-26 season to a close with competition at the 2026 Gulf South Conference Championship. The No. 4 seeded orange and black put up a strong fight against the No. 5 seed Mississippi College Choctaws (16-6, GSC: 4-4) but ultimately fell short in a 4-1 contest at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Complex on Thursday morning.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles
The Choctaws earned the first doubles win at the No. 2 position before the Warhawks bounced back at the top spot with a 6-2 win by Jami Savolainen and Giuseppe Bonaiuti over MC's Mikayel Avanesyan and Joshua Hinton.
 
The deciding battle on court three was won by the opponents, giving them a one-point edge heading into singles play.
 
Singles
No. 59 Savolainen put up a solid fight at the No. 2 singles position but was defeated by the Choctaw's Simon Pfau. No. 75 Bonaiuti put the Warhawks on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the top slot, taking down Mississippi College's No. 52 Mattia Ricci.
 
Court six featured a back-and-forth battle between Lucas Rosvall and MC's Sergio Ramirez Ocana, with the Choctaws ultimately winning 7-5, 6-4. The match concluded with a three-set battle at the No. 4 spot where Harry McDonagh dropped a tight battle to the Choctaw's Mikayel Avanesyan, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
 
With Mississippi clinching the match 4-1, two singles matches were left unfinished. Guillermo Vedia Sanchez was in a close matchup with MC's No. 25 Matias Ruiz, tied 0-6, 6-4, 5-5 while Augustin Wallaert was tied 6-3, 5-7, 1-1 with the his opponent, Florian Walcher.
