MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks women's soccer team (2-2-2) fell 1-0 to No. 9 Lee on Saturday evening at AUM Soccer Stadium in its first Gulf South Conference matchup of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Warhawks and Flames battled through a scoreless opening 45 minutes. AUM created some early pressure, earning a pair of corner kicks in the opening four minutes, but Lee settled in and began generating opportunities of its own.
The Flames recorded eight shots in the opening half, putting five on frame, but freshman Leslie Azouer kept the match scoreless with five saves. Azouer came up with several key stops throughout the half, including back-to-back saves in the final five minutes to keep Lee off the scoreboard.
Courtney Pigford recorded the Warhawks' lone shot of the half in the 44th minute. Pigford's effort was on target, but Lee goalkeeper Abby Whitcomb made the save to preserve the scoreless match. The Warhawks' defensive effort kept the Flames off the board as the teams headed into halftime tied 0-0.
Second Half
The Flames continued to apply pressure coming out of the halftime break, with Leslie Azouer making two saves in the opening 17 minutes of the half. With 28 minutes remaining in the match, play was paused for approximately 40 minutes due to weather in the area. Following the delay, both teams returned to the field and continued to battle for the opening goal.
Azouer kept Lee at bay with another save in the 67th minute, but the visiting team eventually broke through in the 75th minute when an own goal gave the Flames a 1-0 advantage. AUM's defense also continued to hold strong, with Azouer making her ninth save of the night in the 87th minute to keep the deficit at one.
The Warhawks created a late opportunity when Chloe Wallace sent a shot high in the final minute, but Lee held on for the 1-0 victory.
Notables
- In her sixth straight start of the season, Leslie Azouer recorded a season-high nine saves in the match, keeping the Warhawks within one throughout the contest.
- AUM's defense limited Lee to just one goal despite the Flames recording 14 shots and nine shots on goal.
- The Warhawks recorded four corner kicks in the match.
