Robert Penny joined the Warhawks men's basketball staff prior to the 2016-17 season. Prior to being hired at AUM, Penny spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at East Carolina University under head coach Jeff Lebo.
While at East Carolina, Penny assisted with the team's progress on and off the court. Off the court, Penny was responsible for overseeing academic progress by monitoring attendance in the classroom and tutoring student-athletes. Penny's responsibilities on the court included scouting opponents, developing individual and team drills, assisting and coaching and team clinics for high school coaches and players, evaulating practice and game film, assisting in evaluating recruits and implementing team chemistry activities.
Penny was drafted in the 36th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals where he spent three seasons as a pitcher reaching as high as Double A. Penny graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May of 2014 with a bachelor's degree in American history and from East Carolina University in May of 2016 with a master's in sports management. Penny is a native of Whiteville, N.C.
