Velasquez’s Buzzer Beater Drops Men’s Basketball at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. ------ Romoane Eager scored a career-high 25 points for the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team, but Nick Velasquez's shot as the buzzer sounded proved to be the difference, as the Warhawks fell to Union 73-72 Thursday on the road.

NOTES
• The Warhawks slipped to 1-8 on the season.
• The Bulldogs improved to 5-2 on the year.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Eager finished 10-for-16 from the floor, including 4-for-4 from behind the arc, to better his previous career high by two points. He added six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Warhawks.
Darrion Taylor also hit four 3-pointers, finishing with 16 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Desmond DeRamus scored in double figures, posting 11 points, while adding five assists and four rebounds.
Kameron Hornbuckle came off the bench to scored nine points, pull down seven rebounds and block two shots.
• Ashanti Day was one of four Bulldogs to score in double figures, finishing with 19 points, but pulled down 15 rebounds and dished out five assists.
• Charlie Wilson (21), Jarad Scott (15) and Tray Boyd (13) also scored in double figures for Union.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bulldogs scored the first four points of the game and opened the contest with a 12-3 run in the first 5:42.
• AUM battled back with a 15-2 run, behind six points from Eager and DeRamus. With 7:46 remaining in the first half, the Warhawks led 18-14.
• The Warhawks upped their advantage to a first-half high nine points with 1:18 remaining, when DeRamus drained a 3-pointer, making the score 34-25. Scott hit a trey with 58 seconds remaining to cap the first half scoring and sent AUM to halftime with a 34-28 lead.
• A Taylor jumper with 19:13 remaining in the game gave AUM a 10-point lead, 38-28, but the Bulldogs rallied with a 15-5 run and tied the score on a three-point play by Day with 14:19 to play.
• Neither team was able to build more than a five-point lead down the stretch, with the Bulldogs leading by three points, 68-65, with under two minutes remaining.
• Eager sank a trey with 1:57 to play and tied the scored at 68, before Velasquez hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:27 to play.
• Eager hit the front end of two free throws and pulled the Warhawks to within two points, 71-68 with 28 seconds remaining. Julius McCoy knocked away a Union pass that eventually went off a Bulldogs' player, giving the ball back to the Warhawks with 24 seconds remaining.
• Taylor hit a deep 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining, giving AUM a 72-71 lead. Velasquez lifted the Bulldogs to victory with a contested jumper as the buzzer sounded, giving Union the one-point win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM hit 27-of-60 from the field, including 14-of-27 (51.9 percent) from behind the arc. The Warhawks converted 4-of-7 free throws.
• The Bulldogs finished 24-of-52 from the floor, hitting just 5-of-14 from distance. However, Union hit 20-of-27 free throws.
• The Warhawks turned 13 UU turnovers into 21 points, while they committed just 11. The Bulldogs finished with just 10 points off turnovers.
• Union held a 37-31 advantage in total rebounds and an 11-10 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Bulldogs held a 17-14 lead in second chance points.
• AUM's bench outscored Union's 37-5, with Eager leading the charge.

AUM will return to action Saturday, Dec. 10, when it travels to Montevallo, Ala., to take on the University of Montevallo at 5:30 p.m.
