Howard’s Career Night Leads Men’s Basketball Past Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ Brandon Howard scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team past Huntingdon College 88-65 Friday at Roland Arena.



With the win, the Warhawks improved to 5-5 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 0-5.

Howard, who bettered his previous career high by seven points, finished 6 of 8 from behind the arc, while adding four assists. Bobby Thompson added 14 points and seven rebounds. Jeremy Newton, the team's leading scorer entering the game, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals in 21 minutes.

Trailing 11-8 after the opening three minutes, AUM used a 12-1 run and pulled ahead 20-12 with 13:03 remaining in the half following a layup by Rodrick Robinson. Howard knocked down a pair of 3-pointers during the span.

The Warhawks went on the lead by as many as nine points, 26-17, in the period, after Jake Carnley drained a trey with 11:05 remaining before the half.

The Hawks answered with a 16-2 run during the next five minutes and pulled ahead by five, 33-28, following layup by Dontavius Washington with 6:38 remaining in the half.

Huntingdon led by one, 39-38, with 1:32 to play in the period, but layups by Tristen Harrell and Newton gave the Warhawks a three-point halftime advantage, 42-39.

AUM put the game out of reach early in the second half, opening the period with a 12-1 spurt, fueled by five points by Robinson and four by Thompson.

Huntingdon trimmed the deficit to as few as four points, 57-53, but Howard connected on treys on three consecutive possessions to extend the lead back to 13 points.

The Hawks cut the margin to as few as seven points, 72-65, down the stretch, but the Warhawks scoreless for the final 4:24 of the contest.

For the game, AUM converted 49.1 percent from the field, while hitting 11 of 24 from behind the arc. Huntingdon was limited to just 30.0 percent from the floor.

The Hawks were led by Washington and Alex Layson with 13 points. Andre Ashley finished with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Warhawks will return to action Monday, Dec. 8, when they travel to Selma University for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
