Roberts And Smart Post Career-Highs In Volleyball’s 3-0 Loss To Christian Brothers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Redshirt junior right-side hitter Kheala Roberts and junior setter Carly Smart both posted career-highs on Friday evening but the Auburn Montgomery volleyball team could not overcome Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers, falling on the wrong side of a 3-0 decision (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) to the visiting Bucs.
 
NOTES
• AUM drops to 9-15 overall, 1-10 in Gulf South Conference play.
• Christian Brothers improves to 14-15 on the season and 6-6 in league action.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Roberts led the offense with 10 kills while setting her career-high in blocks with five assisted rejections.
• Smart also recorded a career-high in blocks, assisting on four stuffs to go with a match-high 29 assists and six digs.
• Sophomore defensive specialist Haley Toler anchored the defense with 13 digs, followed by fellow sophomore defensive specialist Kiana Yangson with seven.
• Junior middle blocker Brianna Garvin finished second on the team with eight terminations and assisted on a pair of blocks.
• For Christian Brothers, Kapria Manning and Gennah Schoen each had six kills, Anna Graziosi posted 28 digs and Blythe Clausen recorded 10 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Christian Brothers led the entire first frame, scoring eight of the opening 10 points and using a set-best .323 hitting percentage to hold the advantage. AUM cut into the deficit late, scoring three-straight points to make it a two-point affair at 22-20 before a 3-1 stretch by the visitors ended the set.
• AUM took its first lead of the contest in the second stanza, going on a 4-0 run after surrendering the opening two to hold a 4-2 advantage. CBU responded with a 4-0 spree of their own to retake the lead and created a daunting nine-point advantage midway through the frame with an 8-0 run to make it 19-10. AUM responded with a 7-2 stretch to cut the deficit to four at 21-17 before back-to-back tallies for CBU recreated a seven-point separation.   
• Despite posting more kills than the opposition in the third set, AUM could not overcome a -.053 hitting percentage to avoid the sweep. The Warhawks went toe-to-toe with CBU for the opening 22 points, seeing an 11-all score before an 8-3 stretch for the visitors propelled them to a 19-14 edge.  
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM finished the match with 34 kills on a .094 hitting percentage versus 35 on a .198 clip for Christian Brothers
• AUM won the battle at the net with seven blocks with CBU posting six.
• CBU held a slim 41-39 advantage in digs
• Christian Brothers boasted five service aces while AUM had two.
