MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Auburn Montgomery volleyball team concluded its inaugural season on Saturday evening, suffering a 3-1 setback to Christian Brothers on the road.
NOTES
• AUM finishes the season with a 9-21 overall record, 1-15 in Gulf South Conference play.
• Christian Brothers improves to 15-18 and 7-9 in GSC action.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior setter
Carly Smart recorded 26 assists while chipping in seven digs. The Columbus, Ga., product holds the program's single-season record for total assists (770) and assists per set (7.55)
• Junior middle blocker
Brianna Garvin paced the offense with nine kills on a .333 hitting percentage to go with five blocks (one solo, four assisted). The Atlanta, Ga., native established the single-single marks for total kills (227), blocks (82), assisted blocks (52), solo blocks (30), kills per set (2.25), blocks per set (0.81) and attack percentage (.300).
• Redshirt junior right-side hitter
Kheala Roberts boasted seven blocks (two solo, five assisted) and contributed eight kills.
• Sophomore defensive specialist
Kiana Yangson served up a career-high five aces while matching freshman outside hitter
Skylar Coppinger in digs with 10. The two sit tied for the program's single-season record for service aces per set with 0.24 while Coppinger holds the most total with 24.
• Sophomore defensive specialist
Haley Toler holds the single-season marks in digs (332) and digs per set (3.32)
• For Christian Brothers, Kapria Manning boasted 22 kills with 13 digs while Mary Kathryn Miller recorded eight blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM stuck with Christian Brothers for the opening 23 points, trailing 12-11 before eight-straight points for the hosts put them ahead 20-12.
• The Warhawks took the lead early with a pair of points following a 3-3 score and held it for the remainder of the frame. The Bucs managed to tie the score on five occasions, with the Warhawks scoring the ensuing point each time.
• After exchanging the opening 30 points of the third set, CBU went on a 3-0 run to take an 18-15 lead and kept the separation at two or more for the remainder of the frame.
• AUM led by as many as seven in the fourth set, jumping out to an early 11-4 advantage before a 9-1 run by the Bucs gave them a 13-12 lead which they held onto for the rest of the stanza.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM finished the match with 39 kills on a .146 hitting percentage versus 66 on a .250 clip for Christian Brothers.
• CBU held a slim 13-12 advantage in blocks.
• Christian Brothers served seven aces while AUM had five.
• CBU posted 66 digs with AUM recording 47.
