MOBILE, Ala. – In a game that featured 17 lead changes and five tie scores the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team outlasted non-conference foe Spring Hill College for an 84-77 victory on Wednesday evening on the campus of the Badgers.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 5-4 on the season, while the Badgers fall to 2-7 overall.
• The Warhawks are now 4-2 in road games this season.
• Today's game was the first meeting between the two schools since the 2013-14 season when both teams were members of the Southern States Athletic Conference.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior guard
Kenneth Keith scored a game-high 19 points for the Warhawks, connecting on 3-of-4 3-pointers and 6-of-7 free throws.
• Sophomore guard
Darrion Taylor was a close second, tallying 18 points for the Warhawks. Taylor also dished out six assists and pulled down seven rebounds.
• Senior forward
Kameron Hornbuckle pulled down a season-best eight rebounds.
• SHC's Brandon Fischer recorded a double-double, tallying 13 points and 12 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Spring Hill took an early advantage before
Lafayette James-Core hit a layup to tie the game at 17-17 with 12:26 to play.
• The Badgers would build a six-point advantage in the following minutes, only to have
Antoine Pitts tie the game at 29-29 by converting on an old fashioned 3-point play.
•
Chandler Ferguson gave the Warhawks a 38-37 lead at the 1:53 mark with a 3-pointer, followed by a Keith layup and a Taylor jumper in the final minute to take a 42-37 lead into the break.
• SHC went on a 6-0 run to start the second half to take a 43-42 advantage with 18:21 to play, before Hornbuckle hit a layup to retake the lead for AUM moments later.
• AUM would then go on a 13-0 run to take a 55-43 advantage after Keith hit a treywith 14:54 to go.
• The Badgers would battle back back to retake the lead at 64-63 with 6:59 to play on a pair of Andrew Dotson free throws.
• The two teams would battle back and forth over the final seven minutes, only to have AUM pull away at the end to earn the seven-point victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks outscored SHC 36-22 in the paint.
• AUM scored 42 points in each half.
• The Warhawks' tallied 24 points off turnovers, compared to 13 for SHC.
• The Badgers out-rebounded the Warhawks 42-36.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host Gulf South Conference foe Delta State on Saturday at the AUM Gymnasium as part of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader. The two women's teams will play at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4 p.m. The game is also a part of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Association Toy Drive and fans are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to donate to the cause.
