Warhawks Drop GSC Home Opener To Delta State, 71-64

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Playing in their first Gulf South Conference home game in program history the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team fell to Delta State University, 71-64, on Saturday afternoon at the AUM Gymnasium.
 
NOTES
• AUM is now 5-5 on the season with a 1-2 mark in GSC play.
• With the win the Statesmen are 4-7 on the year and 2-1 in league games.
• The Warhawks are now 1-3 lifetime against the Statesmen.
• Today's game was the first meeting between the two programs since the 1996-97 season.  
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior forward Lafayette James-Core tallied a team-high 19 points in the contest, connecting on 7-15 field goal attempts.
• Fellow senior Kameron Hornbuckle pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds for the Warhawks, including eight defensive boards.
• DSU's Brett Warner tallied a game-best 30 points in 39 minutes of play.
• PJ Davis tallied 18 for the Statesmen, adding two blocks as well.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
• DSU jumped out to an early 11-2 advantage with 14:45 to play, before James-Core would tie the game at 11 with a 3-pointer at the 12:52 mark.
• The two teams would trade points back and forth until AUM was able to gain a 23-17 advantage with 6:23 left in the first on a Chandler Ferguson trey.
• The Statesmen would go on a 16-7 run after that point to take a 33-30 advantage into the half.
• AUM pulled to within two points at 37-35 with 17:03 to play on a James-Core 3-pointer, but the Statesmen were able to keep the Warhawks at arms length.
• James-Core would pull the Warhawks to within five points at 49-44 at the 10:52 mark, but DSU would push their advantage to 65-53 over the next seven minutes to inch away from AUM.
Jarvis Johnson cut the lead to 68-62 with 1:02 to play on a pair of free throws, but AUM would run out of time as the Statesmen picked up the seven-point victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
• The Warhawks' bench outscored DSU's 22-8.
• The Statesmen scored 15 points off of turnovers to just four for AUM
• DSU outscored the Warhawks 22-16 in the paint.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host GSC foe Mississippi College on Monday at the AUM Gymnasium as part of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader. The two women's teams will play at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
