Softball Powers Past Clark Atlanta in Doubleheader Sweep

ATLANTA ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team pounded out 23 hits and scored 23 runs, while a trio of pitchers combined to allow just a pair of hits in two shutouts, as the Warhawks picked swept a doubleheader at Clark Atlanta Saturday. AUM won the opener 12-0, before taking the nightcap 11-0, both in five innings.

NOTES
• With the sweep, the Warhawks improved to 6-4 on the year.
• The Panthers fell to 3-7 overall.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Parker Pinholster finished the doubleheader with three hits, including a double, four runs scored, two RBIs and four stolen bases.
• Rachel Ragland was 2-for-5 on the day with four runs batted in and two runs scored. She also tossed four no-hit innings in the opener, striking out four and walking just one, to improve to 3-2 on the season.
• Jaycie Walker had three hits in the twin bill, including a double and a home run, and drove in three.
• Kaylin Finch was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run in game two. She drove in three runs and scored twice, while adding a stolen base.
• Abby Krueger had two hits, two runs scored and a stolen base in game two.
• Kalee Sparks scored four times and drove in a run in the two games.
• Taylor Tiffany tossed a one-hit shutout in game two, striking out six and walking one, to improve to 3-1 on the year.
• Chase Gray-Still and Jessica Vason each had one hit to lead the Panthers.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Warhawks took control of the game in the first inning, scoring three times off CAU starter Shalonda Woods (1-3). Pinholster led off the game with a single, and after swiping a pair of bases, came in to score on a two-run homer by Walker. Christy Hendrix completed the scoring with a two-out RBI single, scoring Amy Persinger.
• AUM upped its lead to 5-0 on a two-run single by Ragland in the third inning, scoring Persinger and Sparks.
• The Warhawks exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth inning, with Ragland and Pinholster each picking up two-run hits. Sparks and Sydney Dishman also drove in runs in the frame, as AUM used six hits in the inning to put the game out of reach.
• Persinger provided the final margin with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning.

GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM took the lead for good in the top of the first inning, when a throwing error by Shamitra Woods following a double steal by Dishman and Persinger allowed Dishman to score.
• The Warhawks added three runs in the second inning. Finch scored on a wild pitch and Ragland scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 3-0, before Dishman plated Pinholster with a RBI single.
• Finch connected on her first home run of the season in the third inning, a two-run shot scoring Krueger, to add to the AUM advantage.
• The Warhawks used five hits to plate five runs in the fourth inning to provide the final margin. Hendrix had the big hit of the inning, a two-run single, while Walker and Finch also picked up RBIs.

UP NEXT
The Warhawks will play five games at the YHC Tournament, hosted by Young Harris College this weekend. AUM will play Anderson (S.C.) Friday at 12 p.m., before facing the host Mountain Lions for a pair of games Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. The Warhawks will conclude the tournament with a doubleheader Sunday. First pitch against the Bobcats is scheduled for 11 a.m.
