WINGATE, N.C. ---- The Auburn Montgomery men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 6-3 victory over Wingate Sunday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Warhawks improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs fell to 4-2 overall.
 
The Warhawks swept the doubles portion of the match, but were challenged at all three spots. AUM took a 1-0 lead at the No. 3 spot, when Santiago Veglia and Matias Destafanis earned an 8-6 win, before Alvaro Terron and Francisco Mendieta held off Tyler Schofer and Filippo Pezzoli, 9-8, at the No. 2 position. Birkir Gunnarsson and Vincent Dubosclard completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory at the top position.
 
In singles, Terron earned a straight-set victory, while Mendieta and Gunnarsson captured three-set wins to provide the final margin. The match-clinching point came from Mendieta at the No. 3 position, where he defeated Theo Dessacs, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.
 
The Warhawks will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 22, when they travel to Rome, Ga., for a 12 p.m. contest against Shorter University.
