Warhawks Wrap up Competition at ITA South Regional Championships

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks tennis teams competed in the ITA South Regional Championships over the weekend. The event, hosted by West Florida University, was held at Ralph Carson Tennis Complex and took place from Thursday to Sunday.
 
MEN'S SINGLES
In men's singles, Guillermo Vedia Sanchez dropped his opening singles match by a tally of 6-3, 6-1, but the trio of Jami Savolainen, Giuseppe Bonaiuti and Raphael Pertusier all advanced into the round of 32.
 
Savolainen defeated Embry-Riddle's Manuel Lanteri three sets before falling 6-2, 6-3 against Rafael Sabio of West Florida. Bonaiuti opened with a 6-4, 6-2 victory but was ultimately tripped up against Lee's Filipe Krohn da Silva in a 6-1, 6-4 battle. Pertusier came away with a thrilling three-set win in the round of 64 but was eliminated in the round of 32.
 
MEN'S DOUBLES
Bonaiuti and Sovalainen teamed up in doubles, falling 8-7 in one of the tightest matches of the entire weekend in the opening round. Vedia Sanchez and Pertusier fell 8-5 at the hands of Barry, wrapping up the men's doubles action for the Warhawks.
 
WOMEN'S SINGLES
On the women's side, Melissa Yakup Pour won 6-4, 6-2 over Rollins' Amina Taibi but fell in three sets in the round of 32. Teammate Nagisa Yonezawa advanced into the round of 32 behind a 6-3, 6-1 win, while Sofia Neri fought through a three-setter of her own in the opening round. Mercedes Garcia Cid fell 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 64 at the hands of Delta State's Trinity Ly.
 
WOMEN'S DOUBLES
Neri and Garcia Cid were bested 8-3 in the round of 32 in women's doubles action, while Yakup Pour and Yonezawa teamed up for an 8-5 win to advance to the round of 16. The West Florida tandem of Carlota Verdu and Sandra Recuenco Tarin eliminated the Warhawk duo in an 8-7 match that went to a tiebreak.

UP NEXT
The Warhawks will return to the court on October 24, when they open the Rollins College Invitational in Winter Park, Fla.
