Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Spring Hill; Wins First Division II Series

MOBILE, Ala. ------ The Auburn Montgomery baseball team split its doubleheader at Spring Hill Saturday, winning the opener 8-5, before falling in the series finale, 7-4, at Stan Galle Field.
 
NOTES
• AUM improved to 2-1 on the season.
• The Badgers fell to 1-2 overall.
• The split provided the Warhawks with their first NCAA Division II series victory.

GAME ONE STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Tanner Russell recorded three hits, drove in a run and scored once.
• John-Mark Cosby finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
• Nathan Langley was 1-for-1 with three runs scored at the plate for the Warhawks. He also retired the final batter of the game for his second save of the season.
• Hayden Friesen recorded his first collegiate hit with a pinch-hit RBI single.
• William Gibson picked up the victory with 2/3 of an inning of relief.
• Hunter Hillyer tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and surrendering just two hits.
• Justin Collier led the Badgers at the plate, finishing 1-for-4 with a walk, run scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.
 
GAME TWO STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Donovan Chandler was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base to lead the offense.
• Houston Davenport and Curtiss Johnson drove in runs for the Warhawks.
• Josh Albritton was the tough-luck loser for the Warhawks, allowing an unearned run and just two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
• Collier paced the SHC offense, adding two more hits, two runs scored and a RBI.
• Michael Druhan and Brandon Harigel drove in two runs apiece for the Badgers.
• Sean Bretz tossed five no-hit innings of relief to pick up the victory. He struck out three and walked two in the outing.
• Michael Romano tossed a scoreless seventh to earn his first save of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED in GAME ONE
• The Warhawks opened the contest with two runs in the first inning. Langley reached on a one-out single, before coming in to score on a two-out hit by Cosby to put AUM up 1-0. After Russell singled and a walk to Trevor Flynn loaded the bases, Cosby sored on a wild pitch by Badger starter Justin Whitsett.
• The Badgers cut the deficit in half on a RBI single by Druhan in the bottom of the first inning.
• Spring Hill took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the second inning. The Badgers tied the score on a throwing error by AUM starter Seth Arroyo, but the big blow came on a two-run double by Collier.
• AUM trimmed the margin to 4-3 on a RBI bases-loaded single by Russell. Brandon Davis worked a walk and picked up the game-tying run batted in. However, on the play, Cosby hustled around from second on a wild pitch by Austin Barrios to give the Warhawks a 5-4 lead. Friesen followed with a pinch-hit RBI later in the inning to extend the lead to 6-4.
• Daniel Rodriguez gave the Badgers hope with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth, pulling SHC to within 6-5.
• The Warhawks capped the scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, with Cosby driving in Chandler with a sacrifice fly and Langley scoring on a passed ball.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED in GAME TWO
• For the third time in as many games, the Warhawks scored in the first inning. Chandler opened the scoring when he scored on a wild pitch. Johnson and Davenport each followed with RBI singles, plating Trey Matherson and Russell, respectively.
• Collier put the Badgers on the board in the bottom of the first inning when he scored on a wild pitch, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
• Spring Hill took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, with a two-run single by Harigel being the big blow.
• Langley reach on a throwing error in the fourth inning for the Warhawks, which allowed Chandler to score the tying run, making the score 4-4.
• The Badgers took the lead for good on a RBI groundout by Neil Ring in the fifth inning.
• Druhan put the game out of reach with a two-run double in the sixth inning to provide the final margin.
 
INSIDE THE GAME ONE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks committed a season-high four errors in the contest, while the Badgers committed one miscue.
• AUM stranded seven runners, while Spring Hill left 13 on base.
