MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- The Auburn Montgomery women's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2017 season Thursday, when visiting No. 7 West Florida defeated the Warhawks 7-2 at Lagoon Park.
The loss dropped the Warhawks to 2-1 on the season, while the Argos improved to 1-0.
AUM held a 2-1 edge following the doubles portion of the match. After falling at the top position, the Warhawks picked up a 9-7 at the second spot when
Celine Lenertz and
Kelly Southwood were victories. The tandem of
Iris Verweij and
Alejandra Gil gave AUM the advantage with an 8-6 win at the third position.
Despite the lead after doubles, the Warhawks were unable to maintain the momentum, as they picked up just one singles point in the six matches. Verweij picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot against Diana Vlad.
The Warhawks will return to action Friday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Jackson, Miss., to take on Jackson State University at 1 p.m.
