MOBILE, Ala. ---- The Auburn Montgomery men's tennis team earned its fourth consecutive victory with a 7-2 win against the NAIA's No. 6 team, William Carey, Wednesday at the Cox-Copeland Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Warhawks improved to 5-1 overall, while the Crusaders fell to 5-2 on the year.
AUM earned two points in the doubles portion of the match, winning at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Following an 8-4 win by
Matias Destefanis and
Santiago Veglia at the third spot, the Crusaders evened the match with an 8-5 win at the top position. The Warhawks took control of the match when
Francisco Mendieta and
Alvaro Terron outlasted Clement Fosse and Christian Hansson at the No. 2 spot, 9-8.
In singles play, Mendieta extended the lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the third spot, before Terron set up match point at the fourth position with a three-set victory.
Vincent Dubosclard secured the match-clinching point at the No. 2 spot, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lucien Samitier. Destefanis and
Birkir Gunnarsson also earned singles victories, each winning in three sets.
The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday, March 4, when they travel to Lander University, for a match at 9 a.m. The Bearcats enter the match ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II poll.
