Baseball Escapes Lion’s Den with a 7-1 Win; Sweep Season Series

FLORENCE, Ala. ----- The Auburn Montgomery baseball team took a mid-week road win from the University of North Alabama on Tuesday afternoon, with a final tally of 7-1.  With the win, the Warhawks take both games of the season series.

NOTES
• AUM improved to 11-13.
• North Alabama dropped to 16-10.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior Curtiss Johnson led the way for the Warhawks offensively with a pair of RBI singles.
• Hank Scott provided five scoreless innings of relief, facing just 16 hitters, surrendering two hits and striking out two.  He didn't surrender a hit until his fifth inning of work in his third win of the 2017 campaign.
• Senior Brandon Davis singled, driving in two.
• Centerfielder Donovan Chandler walked twice, scored once and stole a base.
Trevor Flynn doubled, walked twice and scored once.
John-Mark Cosby registered a single and walked twice.
• Southpaw Garrett Deloney pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Nathan Langley and Michael Tedford each stole two bags and scored a run.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Following a leadoff hit by pitch got the Lions going in the bottom of the first, Elliot followed with a walk.  Subsequently, North Alabama pulled of a double steal to advance both runners into scoring position.  With one out, Holland flew out to center to score the leadoff hitter Lockett to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.  Bannister escaped the inning giving up just the one run.
• The Lions held on to their lead until the top of the fourth.  With one out in the inning, Flynn doubled to start the AUM rally.  After a wild pitch put Flynn on third, Cosby walked to put runners on the corners with one out.  Johnson wasted no time, singling in Flynn for the equalizing run.  After Houston Davenport reached on a fielder's choice, Davis singled in Flynn and Davenport to give the Warhawks the lead, 3-1.  Davis would eventually score on an error by the Lion pitcher.  Warhawks led 4-1 through three and a half.
• After Chandler walked and stole second, Johnson provided his second RBI single of the contest with two outs in the fifth.
• AUM added some insurance in the top half of the eighth.  Tedford walked with one down and Langley followed with a hit by pitch.  With Chandler at the dish, Tedford stole third, but Langley remained at first.  The next play, Langley swiped second and Tedford took home on the throw and the Warhawks moved the lead to 6-1.  Langley would eventually score later in the inning on a wild pitch.
• After Deloney mowed through the Lion hitters for two innings, he took the hill to begin the bottom of the last frame with a 7-1 lead.  Each of the first two hitters were retired on one pitch and his day was done.  Head coach Marty Lovrich handed things off to William Gibson who then retired the final hitter of the ballgame to clinch the victory for the Warhawks, 7-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks left eight runners on base.  The Lions stranded four on the base paths.
• Auburn Montgomery did not commit an error for the fourth consecutive contest, while UNA recorded two defensive lapses.
