Baseball Loses Road Game to UAH Despite Erasing Five Run Deficit

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ----- After falling behind 5-0 early, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team took a 6-5 lead via a four-run top half of the seventh.  However, after tying the game in the bottom of the eighth, the Chargers of the University of Alabama in Huntsville defeated the Warhawks in walk off fashion with a final tally of 7-6.

NOTES
• AUM fell to 11-14.
• UAH improved to 11-15.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• First baseman Curtiss Johnson provided a single and two runs batted in.
• Senior Brandon Davis singled and drove in two.
• Seth Arroyo pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
• Parker Moman went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Michael Tedford walked three times, scoring twice.
Tanner Russell had two hits and a walk.
• Rhodes sparked the UAH offense with a grand slam in the second inning.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• After the Warhawks stranded two runners on base in the top of the first inning, UAH had their leadoff hitter, Ware reach on a hit by pitch.  With the bases loaded, Cleveland drove in the first run of the contest with a fielder's choice.  The Chargers led 1-0 after one.
• The Chargers loaded the bases for the second time in as many innings in the second, and with one out in the inning, Rhodes pulled an offering from Jameson Baker deep into right field, clearing the fence for a UAH grand slam.  They led 5-0 after two.
• Trying to stay in the contest, Auburn Montgomery earned a pair of walks to begin the third inning put the themselves in a position to chip away at the deficit.  Following a fly ball from Russell to right field that advanced Tedford to third, Johnson grounded out to first, scoring Tedford.
• In the top half of the sixth, Russell reached with a leadoff single and Johnson followed with a hit by pitch.  Following a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Flynn, Hunter Hillyer drew a free pass to load the bases.  With a 2-2 count, Moman singled through the left side of the infield to bring the Warhawks within three.
• Tedford and Russell each reached in the top of the seventh to ignite the Warhawks rally.  Johnson followed with a single to score Tedford and the Warhawks trailed just 5-3.  The next hitter, Flynn followed suit with an RBI single of his own to inch AUM even closer.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Davis singled to left to score Russell and Johnson to give Auburn Montgomery a 6-5 advantage.
• A pair of singles in the bottom of the eighth netted the Chargers' sixth run of the contest, knotting the score at six a side.
• AUM managed just a single by Moman in the top of the ninth, and moved to the bottom of the ninth with the score still tied.  Walden doubled for UAH to lead off the inning to give his team a three chances to score the game-ending run.  After Moore went down on strikes trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt, Copeland singled to put runners on the corners with one out.  The next hitter, Hackett ended the contest with a groundball fielder's choice and the Warhawks dropped the hard-fought contest to the Chargers with a final score of 7-6.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks left 13 runners on base.  The Chargers stranded nine on the base paths.
• Each side committed one error in the game.


UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Friday, March 24 when they play host to Georgia Southwestern for a weekend series.  First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
