LAWTON, Okla. ---- Sophomore
Santiago Veglia rallied from a first-set defeat to outlast Cameron's Keiran President at the No. 6 position and secure a 5-4 upset victory by the men's tennis team over No. 25 Cameron Friday at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Warhawks improved to 11-6 on the season, while the Aggies fell to 9-9 overall.
After dropping 2-of-3 doubles matches, AUM fell behind 3-1 after
Alvaro Terron fell in three sets at the No. 4 spot. The Warhawks rallied and tied the score at 3-3 following a three-set victory by
Francisco Mendieta at the No. 3 position and a straight-set victory at the No. 2 spot by
Vincent Dubosclard.
The Aggies pulled to within one match of securing the victory at the top position, when Vinicius Santos was able to hold off
Matias Destefanis in a three-set marathon.
Birkir Gunnarsson brought the match to square with a three-set thriller at the No. 5 spot, where he defeated Julen Gutierrez, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2, to set up match point.
In the match-deciding contest, Veglia dropped the first set 6-3, before rallying to take 6-4. In the culminating set, Veglia cruised to a 6-2 victory to secure the upset win for the team.
The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday, April 1, when they travel to No. 21 Midwestern State. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
