Baseball Drops Home Contest to West Florida

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- The Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped a mid-week contest to future Gulf South Conference foe University of West Florida on Wednesday evening.  The final score was 4-1.

NOTES
• AUM fell to 7-11.
• West Florida moved to 10-8.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
Nathan Langley singled and stole two bags.  He also was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
• Donovan Chandler added a hit, a walk and a stolen base.
• John-Mark Cosby recorded a hit.
• William Gibson provided 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two.
• Jackson Smith picked up the win on the mound after starting the game and lasting 6 1/3 innings, surrendering just one run on three hits and striking out five.
• Chase Kiefer went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Starting pitcher Josh Albritton faced the minimum in the top of the first after walking the two-hole hitter Sullivan and then inducing an inning-ending double play.
• In the bottom half of the first, Langley and Chandler both reached base by way of a hit by pitch and walk respectively, however, they were stranded on base.
• The Argonauts broke the scoreless in the top of the third when Sullivan sent a fly ball into right and the runner May tagged from third.
• Langley got the Warhawks into the hit column with one out in the bottom of the third, and proceeded to steal second.  Then, on the second full count he faced in as many at bats, Chandler chopped one through the right side.  Not testing the arm of the West Florida right fielder, Langley wisely stayed at third.  The very next pitch, Chandler stole second and the throw from the catcher skipped into centerfield, scoring Langley.  That would be it for the Warhawks in the inning.
• A hard-hit ball by May that was misplayed by Langley netted the Argonauts their first base runner of the top of the seventh inning.  With Kiefer at the plate, May stole second but Davenport's throw sailed into the outfield, allowing May to move up to third on the error.  In a 1-2 hole, Kiefer sent an Arroyo offering into right field, giving West Florida the lead.
• In the top of the eighth and looking for insurance, the Argonauts third baseman Lopez doubled to left field and advanced to third on a play at the plate in which Langley gunned the runner at home trying to score from first.  With two outs in the inning, Langley moved from shortstop to the pitcher's mound in an attempt to strand Lopez at third.  However, the first pitch Matthews saw from Langley was lined into right for the third West Florida run.
• The Argonauts added a run in the ninth inning on some sloppy defensive play and the Warhawks went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, losing the contest 4-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM stranded five runners on base.  The Argonauts left eight on the base paths.
• West Florida committed just one error while the Warhawks had four costly defensive miscues, leading to two unearned runs.
• The Argonauts struck out twice while Auburn Montgomery came up empty on six occasions.
• The Warhawks held the first three hitters of the West Florida lineup without a hit in the contest.

 UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action Friday, March 10 when they travel to Talladega College.  First pitch is currently scheduled for 2 p.m.
