Team Effort Lifts Softball Over West Florida in Twin Bill Sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team snapped the 23-game win streak by the University of West Florida in a doubleheader sweep. The Warhawks won the first game 5-2, and responded to a four-run deficit in game two with an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.  

NOTES
• The Warhawks moved to 20-15 on the year.
• The Argonauts fell to 33-10 on the season.
• Freshman Chanel Newcomer tallied a win in game one, a save in game two and her first career home run on a three-run blast in game two as well.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore Kaylin Finch was the only Warhawk to record multiple hits in both games. She finished the first game 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a double, a home run, a run scored and a walk. In game two, she picked up an additional 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and a double.
• Junior Kalee Sparks tallied an RBI single in game one, and finished game two 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
• Freshman Parker Pinholster picked up a hit in game one, and a double in game two. Fellow Freshman Jaycie Walker also picked up a double in the first game, and a single in the second.
• Newcomer earned the win in game one hurling the final three frames and gave up just one hit with no earned runs and a pair of strikeouts. In game two, she tossed 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief and struck out three. She also picked up her first career home run in game two.
• Freshman Taylor Tiffany earned the win in game two after hurling 4 1/3 innings in relief. She gave up just three hits with no runs and tallied a strikeout. In game one, Tiffany threw two innings of relief and did not give up a hit while striking out two.
• Callan Taylor led the way for West Florida with three hits on the day, two RBIs and a run scored.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• West Florida struck first in the opening inning on two hits and an error. Toney reached on a single, and a stolen base followed by an error moved her to third. A Taylor single through the right side put the Argonauts ahead 1-0.  
• AUM responded in the bottom of the second as Finch blasted her fifth long ball of the year to deep left that also plated Hendrix to give the Warhawks a 2-1 advantage.
• Neither team scored in the third our fourth inning, with AUM picking up the only hit in the bottom of the fourth on a Finch double to right-center.
• AUM tallied its final three runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth on four hits and an error. Back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases with one out. A Walker sacrifice fly plated Ragland, and a Sparks single plated Pinholster. A throwing error later in the play allowed Schmidt to come home, which gave the Warhawks the 5-1 advantage.
• West Florida responded with a run in the top of the sixth on a throwing error that brought home Hill to make the score 5-2 in favor of AUM.
• Newcomer sealed the win in the top of the seventh, after not allowing a run to give the Warhawks the 5-2 victory in game one. The win also snapped the 23-game win streak West Florida had acquired.

GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• West Florida exploded for four runs on six hits in the opening frame of game two. All six hits were singles through the infield as the Argonauts jumped out to an early 4-0 lead.
• AUM was held scoreless in the bottom of the first, but would score in every inning the remainder of the game.
• AUM plated its first run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice bunt from Angulo that plated Finch.
• After a scoreless top of the third, AUM picked up an additional run in the bottom of the third after a Sparks double advanced Walker to third. A sacrifice fly from Hendrix plated Walker to make the score 4-2 heading to the fourth.
• Tiffany continued her dominance in the circle for AUM with another scoreless inning in the top of the fourth, as AUM tallied two runs in the home half of the inning. A Pinholster double down the left field line plated Dishman, and a Walker single up the middle plated Pinholster to tie the game at four.
• Another scoreless top frame saw AUM take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth. A bases loaded single from Angulo plated Tucker to put the Warhawks ahead 5-4. 
• After coming in to pitch in the top of the sixth, Newcomer launched her first career home run on a three-run blast to deep left that scored Sparks and Krueger to give the Warhawks an 8-4 lead heading to the final frame.
• Newcomer recorded two strikeouts in the top of the seventh to preserve the 8-4 victory for the Warhawks and the doubleheader sweep over the Argonauts. 


UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Wednesday, April 12, when they travel to face The University of West Alabama in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
