Softball Splits Doubleheader Against No. 17 UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ------ The Auburn Montgomery softball team split Thursday afternoon's doubleheader with No. 17 nationally ranked The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The Warhawks fell in the opener 5-1 despite outhitting the Chargers 7-5, and responded with a 4-2 victory in game two.

NOTES
• The Warhawks moved to 23-18 on the year.
• The Chargers fell to 33-14 on the season.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Freshman Kendall Tucker launched her second home run of the year in game number two with a two-run blast in the second inning. She added a single in the first game.
• Sophomore Kaylin Finch picked up a pair of hits in the first game and an RBI with a hit and a run scored in game number two.
• Senior Sydney Dishman also added a pair of hits in the first game, and also picked up a hit and a run scored in the second contest.
• Junior Rose Schmidt tallied her fourth home run of the year in game number two. Also, junior Kalee Sparks added an RBI double in game number two, and she currently leads the team with 11 doubles on the year.
• Freshman Chanel Newcomer improved to 7-5 on the year, after completing the second game with just two earned runs and five strikeouts.
• Tyler Harrison led the way for UAH on a 1-for-1 showing in game one with an RBI, and a 2-for-4 performance in game two with two RBIs, a double and a home run.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team scored a run in the opening pair of innings, despite both teams picking up one hit each in the first frame.  
• UAH scored first in the bottom of the third. Cornell crossed the plate on a passed ball, and Bannister came home to score after a sacrifice fly from Wascavage to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead.
• UAH tallied two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth. Burns scored on a bases loaded walk, and a groundout from Glover plated Jewell to extend the Charger lead to 4-0.
• Despite picking up two hits in the top of the fifth on back-to-back singles from Krueger and Dishman, AUM was unable to plate a run in the top of the fifth.
• AUM scored its only run of the game in the top of the sixth. Tucker, Walker and Finch all tallied singles in the inning. Finch singled to right center, which plated Pinholster to make the score 4-1.
• UAH added its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Glover single through the left side that plated Cornell. Dishman tallied her second hit of the game in the top of the seventh, however the Warhawks were unable to overcome the 5-1 Charger lead in the final frame.


GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a hitless opening inning, AUM scored three runs in the top of the second. Dishman singled through the left side, and was brought home on Tucker's second career blast to left. Schmidt followed up with a solo home run as well to give the Warhawks an early 3-0 lead.
• Neither team was able to score over the next few innings as both pitchers allowed only a combined three hits. However, UAH brought the game to within a single run in the bottom of the fifth on a Harrison home run down the right field line that also plated Malone.
• AUM responded immediately in the top of the sixth with an additional run on a Sparks double to left that scored Finch. The Warhawks lead 4-2 heading to the home half of the sixth.
• UAH picked up three straight singles to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. However, Newcomer worked her way out of the jam for AUM with two strikeouts and a fly ball to preserve the 4-2 lead. 
• AUM was unable to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh, but Newcomer retired the Chargers in order in the home half of the final frame to give the Warhawks the 4-2 victory in game number two.

UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Tuesday, April 25, when they host Brewton-Parker College in the final series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
