Matherson’s Walk-Off Single in Extras Propels Baseball to a 2-0 Series Lead

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ It took one extra inning, but the Auburn Montgomery baseball team defeated the Georgia College Bobcats on Saturday afternoon, with a final score of 3-2.  The Warhawks will look to complete the home sweep in their season finale on Sunday.

NOTES
• AUM improved to 27-22.
• The Bobcats fell to 30-13.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
Garrett Deloney started on the hill for the Warhawks, lasting 8 1/3 innings and giving up just one unearned run.
Trey Matherson, who entered the game in the 10th inning as pinch hitter, provided the walk-off hit.
• Junior Seth Arroyo picked up the win, pitching 1 2/3 scoreless in relief of Deloney.
Michael Tedford provided a two-run single in the fifth.
Trevor Flynn went 3-for-4 with a double at the dish.
Parker Moman was hit by a pitch and came around to score.
Tanner Russell had two hits in four trips, crossing the plate once.
• Center fielder Donovan Chandler scored the winning run on Matherson's single.
• Charlie Hecht threw nine innings for the Bobcats, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and striking out three.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• With two outs in the top of the first, Mattix stole second and advanced to third when the throw from Moman was errant.  He scored when Wommack singled to short to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
• In the bottom of the fifth, Russell led off the inning with a double down the right field line.  After Moman was hit by a pitch, Brandon Davis sacrificed both runners into scoring position.  With two outs in the inning, Tedford slapped the first pitch he saw to right center, scoring both runners and the Warhawks gained the lead.
• AUM held on to the lead until the top of the eighth inning, after a pair of one-out singles were succeeded by Mattix double to tie the game at two.
• The Warhawks were able to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to come through with a walk-off hit and the game went to extras.
• Georgia College managed just a single in the top of the tenth as Arroyo stranded the go-ahead run in scoring position. 
• Chandler led off the bottom of the tenth with a five-pitch walk and Tedford sacrificed him into scoring position.  After Matherson got acclimated to the offerings of Howard, he pulled a 2-2 offering off the glove of the diving second baseman.  The ball bound into foul territory and the Bobcats were unable to recover before Chandler crossed the plate for the game-winning run.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Bobcats and the Warhawks both committed one error in the field
• Georgia College fell victim to a pair of double plays.  Auburn Montgomery hit into one double play.
 
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will conclude their season on Sunday, April 30 when they will look to sweep Georgia College.  Prior to the game, the 11 senior members of the team will be recognized for their efforts.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
