Baseball Falls in Singles Battle at Columbus State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- Hank Scott logged his fourth quality start of the year for the Auburn Montgomery baseball team on Friday afternoon, but the Warhawks fell to the Columbus State Cougars, 4-1.  Neither team recorded an extra base hit in the contest.

NOTES
• AUM fell to 17-19.
• Columbus State improved to 21-13.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Juniors Donovan Chandler and Nathan Langley both picked up a pair of singles
• Trevor Flynn tallied an RBI single.
• Scott (5-5) lasted 6 1/3 innings, punching out seven Cougar hitters.
• Michael Tedford, Houston Davenport and Curtiss Johnson each had a base hit.
• Caleb Kutsche (8-1) went the distance for Columbus State, allowing one run on eight hits and striking out six.  He gave away just one free pass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tedford singled in the top of the first, but was caught stealing for the second out.  Flynn lined out to second to end the inning.
• Each side went three up, three down in the second inning.
• Davenport singled to lead off the third inning and was advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Davis, but each of the next two Warhawk hitters were unable to push him across and the game remained scoreless.
• The Cougars broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth after back to back singles by Evans and McClellan paved way for a Hart sacrifice fly to left center.  Scott struck out each of the next two hitters to get out of the inning.
• After the Warhawks went down in order in the top of the fifth, Webb walked to lead off the bottom half of fifth.  Berry would follow with a walk but in the process, Webb was nabbed trying to steal by Davenport.  The next hitter, Drinnen singled the first pitch he saw to right center to put runners on the corners with one out.  A pair of RBI singles by Fichter and Evans pushed the Cougar lead to 3-0.
• Columbus State would tack on another run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth to make it 4-0.
Tanner Russell pinch hit to lead off the top of the ninth and reached first via a walk on 7 pitches. Chandler followed with a single.  Unfortunately for AUM, Kutsche induced a double play to dilute the momentum of the inning.  Flynn kept the hopes alive with an RBI single to short and Langley followed with a single, however Kutsche managed to work out of the jam and finish off his complete game performance, defeating the Warhawks 4-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks left four runners on base. The Cougars stranded seven on the bases.
• AUM had the only error in the game.

UP NEXT
• Auburn Montgomery will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they conclude the road-home weekend series with Columbus State at the AUM Baseball Complex in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
